This writer was one of the few people at last week's Student Union General Meet— ing.As I entered the Duffy Ampitheatre through sur— prisingly open doors(after finishing my Chemistry Lab which, unfortunately, coin— cided with the start of the General Meeting), Art Laffin was expressing his negative reaction to the roughly$800, 000 being spent to over— haul the old Library build- ing and'how could we get a (in his opinion)desperately needed Athletic and SUB Com— plex when we let expendit— ures like this go through without first even getting

sideredl...I had made it in time for the discussion on a new Student Union Building....The subject was dealt with without any real decision, except gen— eral agreement that some action should be taken in the very near future if a new SUB is ever to become

a reality.

This brings to mind two important points. The

first is that if there is not 10% of the student body at a General Meeting no binding decision can be made. I would estimate that there was no more than 4% at last weeks meeting. The second point concerns my own opinion of our need for a new SUB.*My7perSOnal sol- ution to the problem is to

Yearbook was the next sub- ject on the agenda.Very little was discussed but a show of hands indicated that most people present wanted the yearbook to continue, even if it meant additional payment at registration. My sugg— estion is that the year— book be produced in a much less expensive manner, eg. paper cover. Anything of such sentimental value would surely be handled gently. I would be thrilled to hear you disagree.

An extra $5 per course is a sun“ sacrifice to give a fel— low human being a decent wage — to keep people who must support a wife and a family above the poverty line. U.P.E.I. is as good a university as any so we should be paying as much for tuition as anywhere else. Again comment on this iS' welcome. Decision of action was left in the air (see Stu- dent Union article page 3). I wrote this report be— cause I feel the topics dis- cussed were of importance to everyone at U.P.E.I. Let it be known that hereafter I will not report on something that everyone should have attended in person. The Gen— eral Meeting, if nothing else, was more interesting and thought—provoking than any class I've ever attended. If you were at the meeting, please tolerate my at—times- poor memory.
