Tue new lamps in front of the Post Office have been lit for the past few nights. The burners are very large—equal, we learn, to thirty candle-power—and throw a brilliant light over the frout of the building and square. These lamps replace the ones takes away on the scere of eeenomy during the reign of Me- Kenzie.

Tue next meeting of the Educational In- stitute will take place on Friday evening, the 10th inst , at Soclock. The business of the evening will be the discussion on ‘‘The best way to secure reguiar and punctual attend- ance at school.”’ The subject will be opened with a paper by Mr. Michael W. Smith, of Queen Square Scheel.

Ons of the decisions arrived at by the Con- ference of Railway men held recently at Ban- gor is, that a night train shall be instituted to leave St Jobn, and connect with the Maine Central at Bangor for Boston in the morning, This will be a great convenience te travellers aad a great object will be the rapid transfer of freight from this Province, P. K. Island and Nova Scotia. The Intercolonial, in order to make the scheme successful, will be asked te lend its aid. The train will in all probability be put on before Christmas.

MoveweNnts of THE FisHIna Fixer.-—-The mackere! fleet have hauled up; most of the Bank cod fishermen are in; the Georges and Bank halibut fleet are reduced to small pro- portions; quite a little fleet are engaged in the Prince Edward Island potate and produce trade ; and three or four vessels are fitting away in the Newfoundland herring business. The number of fishing arrivals reported at this port since our last issue has been 5 from the Banks with 41,000 lbs. fresh halibut and 130,000 !bs. (3 fares) codfish, and 8 from Georges with $8,009 lbs. cedtish and 5600 Ibs. halibat. Last week we reported 43 arrivals with 77,000 lbs. codfish, 159,900 Iba. halibut and 119@ bbls, mackerel. For the week end- ing Dec. 4, 1879, there were only 5 fishing atrivals, with 44,000 lbs. codfish and 4400 ibs. Ibs. halibut.—Cape Ann Advertiser.

Seemingly reliable intelligence from Newfoundland is to the effect that it is being borne in upon the minds of intelli- gent people there that the fisheries around that Island cannot be relied upon for the regular support of the people wholly de-

ndent on them, and that the conviction is spreading that a considerable portion of the fishermen must betake themselves to farming or other, to them, new industries, er be assisted to emigrate. Well, seeing that Newfoundland contains a considerable quantity of fine farming land conveniently Sedsted, the transition from the fishery to the farm ought net to be hard to make.

LETTER FROM CAPTAIN IRVING,

To the Editor of the Examiner.

Mr. Eprror,—That the Capes’ winter mail route has been for many years a very success- ful reute and has had the contidence of the public, which has been expressed,by the yapers very frequently, are undeniable facts.

perhaps, of more importance, and none to which so little attention bas been paid by the different governments. There has scarcely poe been one dollar laid out on it over the bare cost of the trips.

It has, for a winter rout+, so many advan- tages over any other, that its natural position, in the eyes of any unprejudiced mind, could not but give it the preterance of all other places of the Straits. The distance being so much shorter than anywhere else, pute 1t ahead, anquestienably, of all otber routes.

At a time of cross winds, instead of the ice becoming land-bound, as it would be in a bay, the Capes ent it off, and always make openings mere er less frequently, leaving only a narrow strip of ice on the lee cape. Cape {Traverse keeps open later iu the fall than any other harbor on the Island except Georgetown er Souris. it isso far out on the coast line that it cannot close much before the Straits close.

Mr. McLeod, who was on here surveying for the branches, gave it as his opinion that it was capable of being made one of the best little harbours on the Island, and at not a very great expense. he§ advantages the route would be to the country are apparent, [t is opem several weeks longer than ¢ h’town, Crapaad, or Summerside, and as much earlier in spring. Summerside would be greatly bene- titted, also Crapaud, in several ways. In case of vessels being caught in ice in the fall, the steamer could be on haud to tew them out at a moment’s notice, or they could run around to Cape Traverse te finish loading. The whole trade ef the Island with St. Jebn, and other parts, by this route, would be extended a month later, at least every yeas, From per- sonal experience of both Georgetown and the ‘apes rontes, Iam of opinion thats proper steamer would do much more servies at the Capes, taking the winter through. Cape Tra- verse is abeut the centre of the Island which gives it the preference en that score, and Cape Uormentine, the most central on the other side, the distance being very little more from formentine to Halifax, thas from Pictou te Halifax, and a very little greater from Tor- nentine to St. John, than from Shediac to St. John. In consequence of the short water passage, the trip to either Halifax or St. John would be much shorter by this reute than by either of the others. Besides it weuld save passengers very often much sea-sickuess.

At this season of the year nature seems to lead people to this route, as there are about forty persons here at present, wanting to cross,

The great success of the route for so many years (and it cannot be disp»sed of) is a settled fact. Passengers dread travelling to the Capcs much more than they do crossing, and it is the only communication there is with the Island for three or four months, and is liable to be the only possible way for five or six months, the ‘* Northérn Ligkt’s’ performances being so uncertain. Surely this old and much eglected route, is entitled to branch lines of Railway.
