The Household Cavalry.

It is a practical commentary vpon the thorovgh uselessness of the present uni- form of the Household Cavalry that the squadrcns proceeding to Egypt have been almost entirely reclothed. The showy accoutrements and trappings which have so long delighted the eyes of foreigners aod nursery maids have disappeared The brass ; helmet, with its nodding plumes, has been replaced by one of drab felt, encompassed by an unprosaic * pus- garee” of white linen, The glittering cuirass has gone, the snow-white breeches, end the leag, shiny jackboots The dress adopted is less oruamenta), although far more serviceable. The red tunic has been retained until it can be thrown aside for a red flannel patrol jacket. Black overalls or trousers have been converted into pantuloons, and below the kuee a broad strip of webbing is wound round the leg to the junction with the tops of “highlows” or blucher boots of untanned leather. The horse equipment comprises a hay-net, nosbag, headstall, and a certain percentage of men in each troop carry rope harness, so that the horse may be readily employ- ed in draught either with guns or com- missariat carts. The squadron thus strangely bat usefully equipped paraded in Hyde Park for the inspection of the Commander-in-Chief ; aud as they passed through the streets were a source of much curiosity and some amusement to Loudoners, who scarcely recognized their familiar frieuds and protectors.

Prepare for Winter Flowers.

These who have small green-houses or cultivated flowers in their windows have set out their geraniums and other quick growing plants for the summer. Many make the mistake of taking up these plants in autumn, after they have grown all the season in the open ground and potting them to be replaced in the window or green house. The result will always be ‘“‘ long haired” and mis-shapen plants, while, in- stead of blooming satisfactorily during the winter, will take a long time to recover, and never be worth as much ss new plants from cuttings. Such plants may be pre- pared for this month and next, and with very little trouble. Of course, those who have green houses with appliances for pro-

ting need no directions, but many overs of flowers have to content them- selves with such plants as may be grown in the windows of the living rooms. These become attached to their plants, and when one is set ont in the bed they expect it back again. When such a plant goes out consider it thrown away, for it may as well be, and set about replacing it.

The following method will give a few plants with littie trouble: Take a common book, such as a starch or soap box, knock off both cover and bottom, and if need be strengthen it with extra nails. Tack over this a piece of cotton cloth, and the frame will be ready. Select a place where the soil is light and sandy, or if the ground is all stiff, spade in some sand or coal dust to make it light and open, and place the frame over it. if cuttings of Geraniums, Cupheas Verbenas, or other such plants are placed in the soil and covered with the frame, they will soon take root and form nice speci- mens, which, when they begin to grow,may be potted and be ready for winter. If the frame is where it will be shaded at mid day, ali the better, or if not tilt it a little when the sun is very hot, to give ventila- tion and prevent over-heating.

A portion of that book would yield to you more of sound morality than a thousand other treatises on the same subject. In short, if any person studies the English language with a view of gain- ing wisdom, there is not another book which is more worthy of being read than the Bible.” '

Nahant, a rocky peninsula near Boston, where afew rich people go every summer in quest of puresea air, had a severe outbreak of typhoid fever last year, there being about 80 cases. Nearly all, an investiga- tion shows, were due to bad drinking water. These people gave much attention to upholstering, sunk wells, and let the water take care of itself. Out of 190 wells and cisterns exainined, 111 were bad.

Aa order to the Russian army forbids any officer to wear eye-glasses while in uniform. The fashion for them, which has lately sprung up ii the Russian army, has made four-fifths of the officers claimants of bad sight.
