The legend suggests why Christ is unavoidable. He is so much ti part of human life that everything in life is being measured and judged by His example and spirit. Jesus came. ,not to elitidge Ld mil-ld. but to save e wor (John 3:17). But the very fact that He lived and died as He did is a judgment inescapable on everyone irno falls below His standsrd. 59 Years A Nurse istill Going strong

TORONTO. Sept. 2-(OP)-Mrs. Caroline Sewell's immediate am- bition is to keep nursing for just one more year-to bring her rc- cord to 60- years on the job.

The 79-year-old nurse. now do- ing fioor duty at the Toronto Gen- eral l-Iospitalh aeea nothing re- rmarkable in her long service. "After all." she says. "I was only doing my job. Them are lots of other nurses like me. if you look for them."

Mrs. Seweil was graduated fmni Queen Charlotte's Hospital in Lon- don. wheie she specialised inmld- wifery. She delivered at least 8,- 000 babics there before coming to Canada in 1908 with her husband. After coming to Canada. she says. "I had to call in a doctor-10: the delivery." ' '

Sometimes we hear tlifs modem age described as thoroughly pagan. Only too often we uaseatdi-words of this kind without seriously re- alizing what we' mean by, them. Nothing could be closer to the truth iron to pay that our time are pagan. But whst do we mean by it?

We mean first. I suppose. that the world worahips' false gods: that is. it warships power and wealth. We mean that it selects one of these false gods and directs its whole economy towards it.

A Fascist Stats lets nationalism up in the place of God. and wor- ships the state as it should wor- ship Him. it direct: its business. its schools. its agriculture in such a way that they advance the cause of the stats rather than the cause of God; indeed. agiiiut the cause of God. This is paganism at the dogrnstic level. It is the "I believe in the Nation" supplanting the "I believe in God." v

A Marxist pagan worahips, not the nation but the Clan. as the Nazi pagan used to worship Race. No country today is entirely free of this per-up-iciolia error. It was no accident that God. in giving His u imnandments to Moses. said: "First. I am the Lord thy God. thou shalt not have strange gods before Me." He placed this topic first because it touched on man's most vulnerable poin.t.g

But paganism is more than dog- matic. it is moral as well. Pagan beliefs are bound to result in pag- an morality. Here. unfortunately. the whole world is reaping the folly of its false faith. Non-Ohris- tian morality is everywhere ap- parent. It is only too obvious to point out the widespread accq:t- ance of divorce and adultery as a -way of life. despite all tllle thin-gs Christ had to,say against it: But less obvious. and more insidious, is the pagan morality of advertis- ing and the press. The advertiser places "what sells" before "what is true." The whole biisiness of advertising tends to neglect the fundamental moral laws inculcat- ed in the Holy Scriptures.

So. too, with the press: Take, for example. its' use of picturest and comics. Front pages of per- iodicals and journals feature the humnn body. primarily no doubt to sell the paper. but in effect to cater to the looser emotions of its readers. Even the so-called chil- dren's comics will include cut-outs less devised for the el7tertatin- ment of the child than to attract the wanton eye of the adolescent or full-grown ma-n.

There is a Christian moral teaching that a man has a right to his reputation: that it is a sin to ruin his good name either by spreading caluimny about him or by unnecessarily revealing even true things when no 0tlhCr.DI.lI" pose is served than to hurt him or his family Ind. to provide matter for gossip-mongering. News is not God.'It la un-Christian to set aside this kind of moral procedure merely in the Game of coverage. Yet almost daily we find reputat- ions hopelessely destroyed. famil- ies deeply hurt. and the law of God recklessly cast aside. On the fiimaiest of evidence. the good aims of "citizens is bandied about behind thepprotoctlorl of a "police allege."p

My point is not that some re- porters are immoral. It is that both papers and their public de- niandthialtinidofttllinglnspite of the fact that it is fundamental- ly immoral by any Christian stan- dards, This I1 paganism at the moral level. .
