Later Elmer made a trip to the Azores and Gibraltar. While his ship was based at Scavpa Flow he‘ made the dangerous trip to Murmansk, crossing the Arctic Circle and experiencing the nov- elty of as hours of darkness in a 24 hour day. The first day cut they were at- tacked by nine German planes. ‘Three of these planes were shot down. the ship on which Elmer Iserved getting credit for one. His driving licence was cancelled allover Canada as he was convicted under the Criminal Code and not under the Provincial High- way Traffic Act. The defendant in an Excise case was fined $100. and costs by the same magistrate, or. in lieu of payment sentenced to serve three months in jail.

Fourth Annual Inspection 0f Air Cadets

The fourth annual inspection of No. 60, Charlottetown Squadron‘ R..C.A.F. All’ Cadets, was held last evening in Victoria Park. The Squadron has an enrollment 0d 79 cadets, of which 60 were on par- ade. The reviewing officer was Group Captain D.G. Price, officer commanding Nu. 2 A.N_.S. Flight Lieutenant L.R. Glenn, Cadet Liaison Officer for Eastern All’ Command, acted as personal aide to the Reviewing Officer. Ian MacKenzie. is serv- ing with the Air Force. Capt. MacKenzie went overseas 1942 and has been with First Division tank unit for 18 months 1n Italy. Recently he was transfer-red to the Holland front. Flt-Lieut. D. Ian MacKenzie en- listed as a private in 1940 with the R.C.A.1". and went overseas in 1942 as a Sergeant. In England. he transferred to the RAF. and soon was promoted Pilot Officer. Before D-Day he was again pro- moted, this time Eight-Lieuten- . He has been on continual opesaticnal duty over Europe since ay. On one occasion he was the guest of a French couple for ‘a few hours in the French town nf Courcelette and was agreeably surprised when his hosts showed him a photo of his uncle, lit-Col.

Another arlottetown man whose picture the old couple had was that of Sgt. Harvey Douglas. brother of J. L. Douglas, MP. It is interesting note that Sgt. Douglas has visl ed the old French couple since D-Day.

Major MacKenzle knows some- thing about war himself as he is a veteran of World War 1 and was severely wounded at Vimv Ridge. As a direct result of that wound. Major MacKenzie spent three and a half vears in a hospital and is silll suffering from the effects of the injuries received in that fam- ous battle.
