meeting of the board of trustees of the Methodist (brick) Church was held on Tues-

day evening week. The treasurers report showed receipts for the year of nearly $4,000 including $1,000 received from the Ladies’ Mite Society and about $17, as a legacy from the estate of the late Thomas Dawson, Esq. The pew rents are appropriated to meet the current expenses of the church.

Ir seems that Washington Territory is in great want of marriageable girls, The lonely farmers up there have seat out an appeal for women, and a recent carload of Eastern ladies, who had heard of the wonderful suc- cess of some young women who had opened farms of their own inthe wild West, con- cluded that they would also try their hands at agriculture. They reached Olympia, and ‘from thence went to Delta, where within twenty-four hours after their arrival tweive were prosperously married, and the rest en- gaged to handsome young farmers. No un- necessary time is spe it in courting. All the young lady has to do is to look over a group of eligibles and select her partner, and in ten minutes the knot is tied. It’s a lovely coun- try, and from afeminine point of view the customs are charming.

Dr. Charles Mackay, in a letter to the London Daily Telegraph, settles the dispute about the authorship and the nationality of \that beautiful and touching melody ‘‘ H: me | Sweet Home.” The air, he says, 1s English ‘and was the composition of the late Sir ‘Henry R. Bishop. The circumstances of ‘its composition and publication were related ‘to Dr. Mackay by the famous musician |himself. He was, in his early manhood, lengaged by a firm @f musical publishers, | Goulding, D’Almaine & Co., to edita col- ‘lectioa of national melodies of all countries. | In the course of his labors it was discovered that they had no Sicilian melody, and as a ‘Sicilian melody had been promised in the prospectus, Mr. Bishop thought he could invent one, and the air now so well known as ‘‘ Home Sweet Home” was the result. What a world of good might be done with the 1,600 or 1,700 millions of dollars which is annually guzzled and puffed away in English-speaking North America /—Exchange.
