Search Continues For Missing Plane

The organized search from sum-I merside air station for a missing: Dakota aircraft with four men aboard has been abandoned. How- ever, searching operations are be- ing continued from Goose Bay. Labrador and six aircraft from Summerslde are taking part in the operations from that airport. - The plane became overdue at Summerside on Monday evening when it failed to return from a routine navigation training flight. Blow To Small Towns

Mr. Melvin MacQuaid. Souris, stated that the proposed plan to put every community outside the City in the same category strikes a bad blow to the small towns. Under the proposed rates the in- dividual consumer will be asked to pay a service charge of 34.00 in month instead of the 52.25 charge! he now pays, he pointed out.

The service charge or first block. he stated. was too high. He pointed out that the individual consumer in Souris did not use much above 33.00 worth of elec- tricity under the present rates but that the proposed rates would in- crease his costs.

The taxpayer would be hit in another way by having to pay additional for street lights. The street light bill in Souris for 1he' '16 lights would result in an in- crease of 5380, he stated.

Some people in Souris will be forced to discontinue their lights If the proposed rates go into ef- fect. These would be the people who probably have only the lights. and an electric radio. he said

After pointing out how the pro- posed rates would lessen the cost of the big consumer, he stated that the man who would buy elec- tric stoves, washers. irons and other electrical appliances was presumably in a position to pay for his electricity.

He foresaw the danger of the Maritime Electric Company in- stalling more rural lines near Souris

Mr. MacQuaicl suggested that the Commission should make three lines of demarkation, one to in- clude the rural areas. another for Charlottetown and a third for in- coiporated towns. One possible solution, he concluded. would be

Mr. Walton Gaudet. who repre- sented Montague and Georgetown. concurred with the suggestion of Mr. MscQuaid. Under the pro- posed rates it looks as if the loss will be made up from the rural areas and the incorporated towns will be thrown in with them, he stated.

Rural Contribution .

According to the proposal the rural areas will make up nearly 3118.000 and the City about 82.- 000, he continued, and the in- corporated towns nit expected to make up about 325.000 of the rural amount.

He pointed how the incorporat- ed towns are run on a budget which is fixed after a Town Council has been elected. If the new rates were put into effect now there would be no money available to pay the increase in the cost of street lighting and these services would have to be foregone.

He requested the establishing of, a rate for incorporated towns that would be somewhere between the City and rural rates. Mr. Gaudet said that nobody was denying the right of the Mari- timc Electric Company to in- crease its rates but speaking on behalf of Montague and George- town he only Wanted to pay in proportion to what would be paid elsewhere.

Presents Company's View-

Mr. Dennis Stalrl. representing the Maritime lllectrio Oornpsny. stated that the cost of the last block (which includes all elect- ricity consumed above the amount of 200 kilowatt hours a month) was too low in both urban and rural areas. .

The present price to the con- sumer for electricity in Charlotte- town in the last block is 2.0 cents a kilowatt hour while the price under the propued rates will be 1.5 cents for the same amount. This cunts to a reduction of about 0396." he stated. "As I see it. it is ten than the coat. A report was heard from Earl Smith. chairman of the'tennis committee. who lavi- nn estimate of the cast of con- structing the two tennis courts with cement and a surface of asphalt. These courts are to be constructed by the Town. 'Mr. Smith estimates that 3150 would be required from the S.A.A. to look after the expenses of getting tennis started this summer. Bob Clark. chairman of the track and field committee. said that 350 would be sufficient to look after incidental expenses connected with track and field this year. He named George walker. Roland Phlllpson. and two high school boys. Tommy Grant and Wilfred Gilli! as members of his committee.

He stated that whenever the cost of fuel rises there should be some way to increase the propos- ed rates. He stated that the price of fuel was equal to nearly in per cent of the total operating expens- es of the company and if the fuel prices should increase by 20 per cent the cost. of production would increase by 540.000.
