PELEGRAPHIC NEWS.

One of the largest and most influential meetings ever held in this section took place here on Friday, the 1ith inst. All the candidates were present and spoke from their respective standpuvints. Robertson and Macintyre’s Free Trade theories are becoming very stale and the electors a)- ready see that the Grits,their leader among the rest, are playing a double game on the trade question being ardent Protection- ists and absolute Free Traders, according to circumstances. The people see through it. Fully two-thirds of the electors present at the meeting were in favor of the Gov- ernment candidates.

John McLean, M. P. P., made a ring- ing speech, brushing away the flimsy argu- ments of the Opposition speakers with tell- ing effect.

Dr. McIntyre complained that the mer- chants were following him around at the meetings. Mr. Mchean informed the meeting that Mclutyre was himself one of the Souris merchants having gone into business there. Times, therefore, cannot be so bad as Dr. McIntyre describes them, else he would not risk his money in mer- cantile pursuits, as he is doing at the pre- sent time.

This was one of the best meetings held since the campaign opened, and it is now admitted that the Government’s candidates, McDonald and Muttart, will be returned by hundreds of a majority.

Every day throughout the different parts of the Dominion, the N. .P. Liberals are openly announcing their abandonment lof Mr. Blake on account of the shirty nature of his tariff policy.

In Montreal, men formerly Liberals say that Mr. Bilake’s proposition to make no changes in the tariff until after an elabor- ,ate enguiry by means of a commission would throw the business of the community into utter confusiun and would do more ‘damage in three months than could be re- ‘ paired in many years.

Business men, real estate holders and stock holders are wakening up to a_realiza- tion of the evils impending in the event of the defeat uf the Government. The same feeling is passing like a wave over the ea- tire community.

| In Ontario and Quebec the effect is most marked. Men of whose return the Oppo- sition were very confident a week 6r two

It looks now as if the Opposition would prove to bea mere shell instead of the solid compact body they thought they were.

A Sad Ending.

_ Joseph McLellan, 76 years of age, engine driver and shunter onthe Intercolonial, jmet his death in an extraordinary manner \yesterday. While in ¢onversation with ja fellow employe, McLellan remarked : |‘ Tf 1 get over this day I shall complete my _ thirty years on the road.” A few minutes | after saying this, he placed an oil can with a sharp nozzle on the step of the engine, and went to get up into the eab, but missed | his footing,-fell and struck the nozzle-of the {oil can, which entered behind his ear.
