Sir,—The travelling public would like to know, (if there bs any one who can tell), why the bridge, kaown as Roger's bridge on Dunk River stream, in Lot 26, has hese, up now close on three weeks, while the specificatiun says ‘‘ it mustnet be up for more than six days,” Sucha state of af- fairs is too bad. We would certainly ex- pect better fromthe powers that ba just now, seeing that they have had the man- agement of affairs for so short a time, Again we understand that the said specifi- cation states that the mud silis are to be placed level with the bottom of streams. Instead of this we are informed that they are not within three feet of the place called for a spec fization. Now, we would like to know why this is so, and if it is the way the Grits propose uanaying the »ffiirs of this Province! The sooner the peuple see and realize such glsring incapacity, the better for themselves. When we consider, in the first place, the raseality the Govern- ment displayed in awarding the tender for this bridge tu a petrifi-d Grit, whose ten- der was considerably higher than that of ano’ her —whose pohtics they were nor sure of, already exposed in your columus, we must condemn the Government. Why does not the Commissioner of Public Works call around now and see these works? He seemed to be very energetic during the late election in the First District of Queen’s County. Why this extraordinary lull? Ifhe has too muchon hand to at- tend to at present, why not send the newly appointed engineer, Mr. Callaghan to pro- nounce upon it? [t is all very fine to play into the hands of their friends to suit the convenience of Mr. Burris, the contractor, and put money into the pocket of Mr. Dcrummoni the inspector. But the travell- ing public will not tolerate such much longer,—and why shouldthey? For our part we consider the Government erred in not continuing with Mr. Murphy as inspec- tor of this bridge. It was « mistake to cancel his appointment, as they will find him ‘*a hard man to feed.” Seeing that

that there are now 62 towns in England and Wales with a population exceeding 50,000, London has 4,211,056, Liverpoul ! 517,951, Manchester 505,343 and Birming-! ham 429,171. Liverpool is not growing fast. the decline in its rate of increase be- ing 6 per cent. In is interesting to note that England and Wales contain 72.8 per: cent., or nearly three-quarters of the total population ef Great Britain and Ireland, that freland contains 12 5, or one-eighth of the whole, and Scotiand 10.7 per cent. The census again brings out the interesting fact | that the proportion of females tu malos continues’ to imerease, there being now 14,950,542 females to 14,059,340 males, an | inequality probsbly due in a measure to | the jarge emigration of the sex most able: to seek new fields of activity. There! are 6,146,900 families in the country, an increase of 513,708, orover 9 per cent. in the ten years, a rate not equal to the total growth of population, but still satisfactory, and the number of inhabited houses has in- creased by 621,183, or 12.9 per cent. Uf course, the increase of population is not spread equally over the country, and a marked feature of the sensus is the decrease in the rural and agricuitural districts. In 13 counties there are decreases, comprising 261 registra- tion areas, the increase being confined almost entirely to the cities and town,

The population of England and Wales on the night of April 5 last was 29,001,018, au increase of 3,026,572, or over 11 per cent., upon the figures of 1881; and this, be it re- membered, was achieved in the face of an enormous and steady emigration. During the ten years 3,552,952 persons have emigrated from the United Kingdom, of whom no less than 1,571,856 were English people; so that the actual increase of the race in the decade has been almost 54 millions. This fact coupled with the nearly stationary condition of the population of France is a satisfactory evidence that England will more than main- tain her position relatively to the other na ious of Europe.

Exeeutions by Eiectricity.

The new law of the State of New York, for the execution of criminals by the electrical current, instead of by hanging, was enforced for the second time on the 7th of July, upon the bodies of four murderers, ‘The execucion took place at the Sing Sing State prison. The death i1 each case was instantaneous and painless. here can be no question of the superiority of this mode of inflicting the death penalty over the rope system. The attending surgeons were two eminent doctors, namely, Dr. Carlos F. MacDonald and Dr. 8. Ward. In their official report to the warden, they give the following particulars :

‘“‘First—All of the condemned walked into the execution room unrestrained, with firm- ness and without assistance, seated them- selves in turn in the electric chair without the slightest protest or resistance, an4 qnietly submitted to the adjustment of the retaining traps and the electrodes.

‘‘Second—In each case unconsciousness was produced instantaneously by the closure of the circuit, was complete, and persisted with- out interruption until the heart’s action had entirely ceased and death had certainly

vecurred. In each case death was mauifestly prinless. ‘‘Third—In compliance with the statute,

an autopsy was made in each case, as s00n 48 practicable, by Dr. Ira T. Van Giesen, of New York, in our presence and under our supervision, with the result ot revealing the same gross changes in the blood and tissues previously ubserved in cases of death by the action of strong electric current.

dition it has been allowed to remain.

Within the last few weeks it has received

further injury. Every one in this vicinity

knows how valuable it has been in the past as a harbor of refuge for fishing boats, and it is hoped that it will not be allowed to go to ruin as it certainly will if not re- paired suvon. It cost some thousands of dollars, which will be all lost if something be not done before the heavy northerly

According to a letter received at Omaha, Nev., a few days ago, by Abe Goldstein, a well-known citizen, S. Gerber, who has lived in Omaha for the past five years, has peen exiled to Siberia by the Russian authorities, Gerber went last March to Myszyuca, near the German frontier, his vative town in Poland, for the purpose of _Teturning with his family, who had re-

mained in the old country. His appear- ance in the little towu excited suspicion, and his arrival soon reached the ears of the auchorities, Fearing arrest, Gerber fled across the frontier into the neighboring province. The authorities of the German towa in which Gerber had taken refuge turned him over to the emissaries of the Czar, who took him in chains to Myszyuea, where he was tried on a charge of running away to America. Gerbet claimed to be 4 citizen of the United States and showed | papers, proving that he was naturalized citizen; but in spite jof this he was sen- tenced to imprisonment for one year in jail at Lamsey, the capital of the province, and afterward to be banished to Siberia for five years and his property to be contfi- s:ated. Geabar had intended to return to Omaha with his family and set up in busi- ness.
