NEW BROOKVALE FACILITIES

Cross country skiers will be looking on in anticipation as Brookvale, the site for the 1991 Canada Winter Games. is developed into P.E.I.'s first Nordic Touring Centre. The nordic site which will be part of Brookvale Ski Park is being developed by Department of Tourism and Parks under the technical guidance of Guy Laviolette (cross country technical delegate) and Murry Turner (biathalon technical delegate).

The planning for the site has been completed and Don Walters of Tourism and Parks is supervising the development. with completion scheduled for February 1990. According to Don, the Department has two goals. Firstly, they want to develop a Canada Games site of which all Islanders can be proud. Secondly, they want to leave a legaq' for P.E.l. which will see Brookvale as one of Atlantic Canada‘s top cross coutnry ski touring areas.

The new nordic site will have a new access road for two way traffic and a permanent parking area. Three additional parking areas will be aeated for the Games and later removed. The new lodge will _ contain a waxing room (also used for ski storage). (I a lounge, washrooms, a meeting room, a kitchen/canteen and a mechanical area. lt will be fully accessible for the disabled. This permanent facility will be supplemented with temporary trailers for the 9x Games.‘

In front of the lodge, a level area the size a football field will serve as the start and finish areas for both individual and relay races in cross country and biathalon events. Before and afterthe Games. it will serve as an ideal location for holding instruction and training clinia. The biathalon range faces north into a hill so that competitors will not be facing into the sun when shooting,

A total of 8 km of new trails will be developed and will complement the already existing fine network of trails at Brookvale. Loops of 1.25, 2.5. 3.75. 5.0 and 7.5 km will make up the competitive trails.

The new trails will all be 15 to 22 feet wide and

will provide fast. challenging skiing for the Games m and exciting but safe skiing for recreational skiers k before and after ‘91. The new Nordic Centre will

also be linked to the existing trails at Brookvale

and additional recreational trails are planned. All . . . of these facilities will be accessed through the new Nc‘” B'mkvak Facum‘”
