Arnold shows in his literary and theological essays A produc- tions like "God and the Bible." and "loitlersture and Dogma." "Culture and Anarchy" how the old theories are no longer sstlsisctory.

The poem. "Dover Bosch" is quite characteristically Arnoldlan. There is E and pathos about it and. this is like Arnold. There is "the eternal note 0! sadness."

The setting is evening and he and his wile are sitting looking at the water,- Dover Beach. The sea is calm and the moon lies lair on the stratie. We recall Wox-dsworth's line - "the see that bares her bosom to the moon." Likely it was in the mind oi A!- noid, for he was an avowed Wards- worthlsn.

He and his wife listen to the tide: there is the grating roar oi pebbles as the tide moves them along the strand. This brings the eternal note or sadness in the listeners. .

He says that the Greek poet. Bophccles. heerd the same songs by the Aegean long ego. and it spoke of "human misery.” It had its own meaning ior Arnold. the modern poet.

The see or isith was once Inn and the tide was high. It was so though 5 "bright. girdle encircled the globe." but now things have changed: the tides are retreating and all he can hear is "the melan- choly. long withdrawing roar"
