Not Trustworthy One afternoon a gentieman was shown into Mr. Lamer’s library. ’ Mi Lamar,’ asked the visitor* ‘do you know a lad bythe name of Gregory, Bassett .
“[ guess 80,” replied Mr, Lamer with a smile. ‘That 1s the young man.” he added nodding toward Gregory.
The latter was a boy aged about fourteen. He was drawing a map at
the wide table near the window.
“A bright boy, | should judge,”’ commented the visitor, looking the top of his glasses. He applied tor a clerkship in my mill,,and referred meto you. His letter of application shows that he is a good penman. be at figures?"
‘Rapid and correct,” was the reply.
“That’s good! Honest is he?”
“Oh, yes,” answered Mr. Lamar.
“The work is not hard, and he will be rapidly promoted should he deserve it. Oh! one question more, Mr Lam- ar; is the boy trustworthy?”
“I regret to say that he is not,” was the grave reply.
“Eb!” cried the den’t want him.”
That ended the interview.

He had set his heart upon obtaining the situation and was very much dis- appointed over the result.
“Gregory, I could not deceive the gentleman,” Mr. Lamar said, ina low tone, more regretful thanstern. “You are not trustworthy, and it isa serious failing; nay, a fault, rather. instances occurred within as many weeks, which sorely tried my patience, and cost me loss of time and money.”’
Mr. Lamar’s tone changed into one of reproach, and his face was dark with displeasure.
“I gave you some money to deposit in bank,” he resumed. “You loitered uatil the bank was closed, and my note went to One evening I told you to close the barn, You neglected todoso. The celt get out through the nigbt, and fell into a quarry, and broke its leg. I had to shoot the pretty little thing, to put an end to its suffering.”
Gregory lifted his hand in a humili- ated way.
“Next I gave you a letter to mail. You loitered to watcha man with a tame bear. ‘The nine e’clock mail will do, you thought. But it didn’t, being a way mail, and nota through mail. On the following day I went fifty miles to keep the apointment I made. The gentleman was not there to meet me, because he had not réceived my letter. [lost my time,and missed all the bene- fitof what would have been tome a very profitable transaction. Itis not too late for you te reform; ard unless you do reform, your life willprove a failure.”
The lesson was not lost upon Gregory. He succeeded in getting rid of his heed- less ways, and became prompt, precise, and trustworthy.

The following extract is from the evidence given by Sir William Gull, M. D.. F. R. &., before the Select Commit- tee of the House of Peers on intemper- ance. He said :—
“I think that inttead of flying to alcohol, as many people do when they are exhausted, they might very well drink water, or that they might very well take food, and would be very much better without alcohol. Ji 1 am-fatigued with overwork, personally, my food is very simple. J eat the raisins instead drinking the wine. I have had a very large experience in that practice for over thirty years. This my own personal experience, and I believe it is a very good and true experience.
“] should join issue at once with these who believe that intellectual work can not be so well done without wine or alcohol. I should deny that preposition and hold the very opposite. It is one ofthe commenest things in English society, that people are injured by drunk without being drunkards. It goes On 80 quietly thatitis even very difficult to observe. There is a great

habitual use of wines in their various kinds, and alcohol in its various shapes, even in so-called moderate quantities, It leads to the degeneration of tissues ; it spoils the health, and it spoils the intellect.

It is said in some cases the brain has eutirely gone from leaving drink off suddenly; but that is fal- lacious, the brain might have gone from previous habits. I hardly knew any more potent cause of disease than aleo- hol, leaving out of view the fact that it is a frequent source of crime of all de- scriptious. lam persuaded that leetur- ors should go about the country lectur- ing the people of the middie and upper- middle classes upon the disadvaatages of alcohol as it is daily used.
“The public ought to know that of all the diluents or solvents for the nutritious parts of food there is nothing like water. Water carries into the system the nutriment in its purest form.”
