The evils of Saturday night di in lL maon, have at itint phlegmatic Kngtishmesa to throw uside the old cry, that restricting the right to sell liquors was interfering with the poor man’s liberty. In order to form un approximate idea of the extent to which Saturday night drinking is in lulyed in, a meeting was held in Exeter Hall afew days ago to take into con sideration a census which has just been taken of the pereous visiting public houses between the hours of! nine and twelve on Saturday night. A represen- tutive district Was selected in each quarter of the metropolis, aud the work of taking the census was done chiefly by members of ‘l'olmers-square Help-myself Society. The details of the census were as follows:—South = district (tifty
: 17,347 men, 10,665 women, children—total, 29,657. West
(forty-nine houses): 12,809 men, 7,455 women, 1,698 children— total, 21,962. North district (fifty-two houses): 11,405 men, 7,731 women, 1,958 children—total, 21,092. East district (forty-nine houses): 7,246 men, £933 women, 1,718 children—total, 13,- S97. Grand total, 200 houses, 48,805 men, 30,784 women, 7,019 children— 86,608. A census taken on Monday morning last, revealed the fact that 1,250 women entered twelve public houses in St. Pancras between the hours of ten and twelve. The houses in the poorer districts were most patronized,no less than 165 women enteripg one pub lic house. This is next door to a pawn- broker’s, and the women in large num- bers were seen to pass from one house to the other. This meeting was presid- ed over by the Bishop of London, who is taking the most lively interest in the cause of temperance. Mr. Samuel Morley, M, P., is also interesting him- self largely in the cause of temperance. Ile has declined to offer himself for re- election onthe ground that he wants leisure to devote to combating the evils of intemperance. When a distinguished literary mao like Mr. Morley buckles on the armour there is sure to be some severe fighting. The Sunday closing agitation is making remarkable head- woy.— Presbyterian Review.

Russia’s Preparedness for War
The Russians now have 120,000 men between the Caspien Sea and Herat. According to the best military estimate Russia’s position is unassailable. I+ would be madness for an Angio-Indian army of iess than 250,000 mea to attempt to operate in Central Asia against Russia. The following plan of operations in Central Asia has been drawe up by General Gourko, and will he put into execution in the event of war. The principles of the campaign would be thoseot the Moscow cumpaign cf 1812 against Napoleon. The second Russian commander would strictly avoid any general engagement until the Anglo-Indian army was drawn into territory at least six hundred miles beyond Candahar. A third Russian corps @armee wou'd awaitthe Anglo Indian advance in a strongly defen- sive position on the Kusban and Murghub rivers. Further 13,000 Cos- sacks at the first point of British ad- vance would swarm through Afghanis- tan, Srouse the whole country,proclaim Ayoub Khao Ameer and harass British communications and supplies, raiding around the British army, stampeding camp followers, X&c., but avoiding a serious engagement. A fifth corps of observation of 31,000 men, and 1,500 Cossacks to be stationed at Checkish Bar, on the Caspian, rea?y to march to Teheran the instant the Shah of Persia shows the slightest sign of aiding the English. Sixth,when the Anglo-Indian army has been drawn far into the in- terior, worn out by the difficult coun- try and worried night and day by Cos- sacks, it would be attacked simultane- ously by 10,000 men forming the first Russian corps d’armee. In case of British victory over the Russians the advance would be followed by the im- mediate destruction of railways and made very slowly but surely.

Boston has always been very proud of her equestrian statue of Washington by Thos. Bali, loc: t-d on the Public Garden. Itis ¢he one tigure of all Boston which the crities admit is excellent. Even foreigners State that there is nothing finer in Europe. The horse has been declared perfect. When they laugh at what they are pleased to term our monstrosi- ties in the way of statues we have led the carping ecritie to our Washington and «xclaimed with pride, “Look at this.” A good Bostonian had a friend from the country whom he introduced to the statue The old gentleman looked at it some time and finally exclaimed : “A splendid horse, but he hain’t got no tongue.’’ And all those years no Boston critie has discovered that a horse with the bits in his mouth would naturally show bis tongue.
