On Wednesday last there took Bloomfield a joyous feast ; Jubilee of M. labbe Felix of the parish. The well-known modesty of the cure of Bloomfield caused him to conceal from the publie the fact that the 16th of January was the twenty-fifth anni- versary of his ordination to the priesthood ; but knowing ful! weil that his confreres would never forgive him if he allowéd the date to pass without their knowledge, he decided, at the eleventh hour, to give them notice, and, as consequerce, only the Revs. D. McDonald, Tignish, S. A. Picotte, Palmer Ruad, and A. E. Burke, Alberton, were present.

M. Vabbe VanBlerk is a native of Bel- gium, and before coming into the diocese of Charlottetown, was an active member of the clergy of the diocese of Arichat under Bishop McKinnon. He is one of the worthiest of our Island priests. A true and sincere friend, a pious priest, an ex- cellent administrator, in a word a very mode! of a country pastor. When he took charge of Bloomfield the parish was dis- ganized and incumbered As h debt; hoe has made of it one of the most flourishing of the diocese of Charlottetown. He never

the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Father VanBlerk isa learned priest, ex- celling especially in his knowledge of the classics.

Certainly if his parishiqners, in whose interests he has worked so well, and who justly esteem and venerate him as their well-beloved father, were aware that he celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his pricsithood on the L6cth, they would have made a demonstration in every way worthy of so good a pastor.

At the banquet, the priests present spoke of the amicabie relations which always ex- isted between them and their good neigh- bor, the cure of Bloomfield, and praised his many good qualities of head and heart. Father VanBlerk, moved almost to tears, made a very touching reply. The general prayer in which the Moniteur joins most

heartily was that the gvod Cure might live to hear the chiming of the golden belis of

his 50th anniversary in the priesthood.

His clerical friends presented him with a beautiful souvenir, and he received many messages uf congratulation from the land of his birth.

In Mr. A. A. Bartlett’s lecture on ‘* The Conquest of Mexico,” the audience as- sembled in St. James’ Hall last evening

enjoyed a very delightful treat. Mr. Bart- lett first drew a graphic sketch of the coun- try and its highly civilizéd heathen people before Cortez set upon it his invading fvot. Chen he referred to the proud and com- manding position of Spain anes r Ferdinand and Isabella, and the wonderful exploits of her brave and brilliant cavaliers. And then he proceedea with the thrilling tale of the Spanish invasion of Mexico, showing how the daring and indomitable spirit of Cortez, aided by a handful of soldiers with gun powder and horses, prevailed against aud overthrew a powerful aud warlixe nation, divided against itseif, ruled by the supe rstitious and vacill: ving Montezuma, and impressed with the idea that the in- vader was the ** Fair God,” whose advent the people had been taught to expect.
