Hughes And llalbo Win Wrestling Tag Match At The Forum

The heroes overcame the vil- lains last night as Len "Cowboy Hughes and Sal Balbo teamed up to defeat Rasputin. the Russian Bear and Tiny Mills in a wild iody slinging team tag wrestling iiatch at the Forum.

Hughes and Balbo. after losing he first fall, came back to take he next two. They were loudly ipplauded by the crowd who rode lasputin and Mills. and not with- vut cause. all night.

partners. Hughes and Mills con- tinued their rough tactics and Hughes threw Mills over his head sri hard that the big fellow broke the boards of the ring.

But in the end Rasputin and Mills by their tactics defeated themselves. Hughes had an arm and headlock on Mills and was in the centre of the ring with his back to Rasputin. The Russian Bear. however. broke the rules and jumped into the ring and was sneaking up behind Hughes to de- liver a punch.

Suddenly Hughes whirled and spun Mills with him. Rasputin's punch instead of hitting Hughes struck Mills and laid out his partner. Hughes then jumped on Mills and won the third fall. As Mills came too he and Rasputin went wild. They threatened the referee and gestured wildly at the fans.

Balbo was awarded the win over Rasputin in the first individual match at 16.21. Rasputin was dis- qualified for manhandlirig the referee.

Tiny Mills. wearing black jeans. was pinned to the mat by Hughes at 11.03 in the second match. Hughes knocked Mills over the referee and then pinned him down.

The pennant races in both leagues tightened Thursday as New York Yankees closed within a half game of Chicago in the American League and New York Giants pulled within five lengths of Brooklyn Dodgers.

Cliff Mapes' three-run pinch double in the eighth inning gave the Yanks a 3-0 victory over Washington and the opportunity to gain on the White Sox who

were rained out of their game with Detroit.

The Giants gained a full game on Brooklyn by nipping the Dodgers 54 on Monte Irvinis three-run homer. his second home run of the clay, in the eighth

inning. That blast made up for three errors by Giant third base- man Hank Thompson. The bob- bles permitted two Dodgers to score and set up a third run.

In the majors' only other day- light contest, Philadelphia's Phil- lies edged Boston 3-2 in the 10th inning on a wild throw to home by Roy 1-Iartsfleld.

The wild throw at Philadelphia by Hartsfield allowed Tom Brown to score from third with two out.

NEW YORK. June 28 -(AP)- Bob Satterfield stepped aside to- day to permit boxing's golden boy. Irish Bob Murphy, to get a title crack at Joey Maxim. the reluctant light-heavyweight cham- pion. in September.

It was set up back of home plate over three weeks ago and awaits only minor renovation to make it habitable for the denizens of the fourth estate. We're going to have a grand opening celebration. Thanksgiving turkey would be ap- propriate. we think. for two rea- sons. First. because we're going to be so thankful when it opens: secondly. because we're afraid it will be Thanksgiving Day before it does.

In the meantime we try to keep score with some boys playing tag on our right and others playfully placing firecrackers in other boys' pockets on our left. Cute as all- get-out. No matter where we sit it's a three-ring circus with the ball game just one of the aide- show attractions. Every two min- utes one of the kids wants to know the score. and who's ahead. He could stay home and read about it in the paper next day but he has his firecrackers to dispose of.

The regular lea- gue game. played on Memorial Field was the hardest hitting. most exciting game this lesson. .

The Falcons combined three singles and I double to gain their win in the ninth. Cliff Ready and Shepherd singled and Joey Le- Clair drove them home with a double. Then with the score tied 7-7 Whitlock drilled A single through the hole between second and short to send home Leclair with what proved to be the win- ning run.

But the game wasn't over and Johnny Stanley's' west endeta came to bat in the last half of the ninth determined to turn de- feat into victory '"Cuker" Pineau drove a long single into left field and pitcher. Jackie Burke followed with a broken but single. Burke was forced at second as McKnight got to first on a fielder: choice. Then Coach Whltlock spiked the Anchors' rally. Elmer McNeIll. a hero of Tuesday night's game. lined out to Whitlock. Buck wheeled and threw to Spy Ready at first to double McKnight and end the ball game.
