Pursuant to notice a meeting was held in Stewart’s Hail, Cardigan Bridge, on Thursday, the 10th November, inst., to cons der the desirability of forming an Agricultural Society, in that section ef the County. Owing to the blustry state of the weather, the meeting was not very well attended. | G. F. Owen explained his reasons for calling the meeting, and having made a few remarks on the usefulness of Agricul- tural Societies in general, propesed, sec-: onded by Donald Stewart, Esq , Cardigan, that vames D. Dewar. Esq., Brudenell, ‘be chairman of the meeting,—which was ‘adopted.

The Chairman having duly announced the matter for discussion, waited an ex- pression of opinion from those present.

Geo. F. Owen advocated the forming of an agricultural Society and said that by having a Svciety formed, a club room could be obtained where the farmers who joined the club could meet together once 4

richness, ‘and natural fitness, give it @' Week and discuss matters interesting to

legitimate pre-eminence, and that cheapness of living, or in other words, the interests of the people would he the reward of this balance of cums etition. How little does the experience of to-day confirm those anti- cipaticns of future prosperity.

| After a civil war. almost unparalleled in| history, the United States of America found

few nations of old Europe could have threwn off. Obliged to provide imme- diate resources, tyey could not wait for the theories of classical economists. Without regard to exciting opinions as to custom-/ house duties, they, without hesitation and! contrary to all expectation, levied an} almost prohibitory tax on all foreign pro-| ducts. The effect of these measures was | immediate. The new taxes enabled Am erica to remain master of the situation and | to fulfil her pecuniary engagements. Her); ‘manufactures, protected from foreign eom- | ‘petition, have eprung up into life and| ‘ vigour which have placed her at one stroke! in the highest rank, as was shewn by her | display at the last Paris Exhibition. Inj short, the United States are not only ceas-

ing to be tributary to the old world but ars) becoming its rivals both in the far East an

{ia our own markets. This is not only the | ease in manufactures but even in agricul- jture itself, thus affecting our most import- lant interests * * * In the face of such icontingencies aa these we cannot allow| | ourselves to remain indifferent. It is mani-| ifest that the atruggle in which we are ‘engaged is carried on under conditions, the gravity and extent of which will in- crease rather than lessen in the future. In such a situation our duty is plainly marked out for us. We must first protect ‘ourselves, and then, as far as possible, re- gain the markets for the goods we formerly , expoated.”

| Such was the conclusion arrived at in ‘February, 1879, and addressed to Eng- lish public opinion by one of the most eminent of French economists. Is it | strange that a review of the same re- imarkable set of circumstances had, at about the same time, led a vast majority of the thinking and patriotic people of ‘the Domirion, to throw aside the * the- ‘ories of classical economists,” and adopt; ‘a policy suited to the altered cirenm- 'stapces in which they found themselves placed? On every side of us, from without the bounds; of our country, as /well as from within, from Trance as iwell as from Eugland, the most con- vincing testimony comes upon us of the wisdom of the promoters of the Nationul Policy. Long may they live to witness the benignant fruits of their labors.

Lavers, of Yarmouth (fer four years pastor of the Chebozue and Arcadia Baptist Charch), | being about to remove to Prince Edward ‘Island, a meeting was recently held in his old field of labor, to express the esteem in which Mr. Lavers was held, and to give expression tothe good wishes with whichhe will be followed. The Yarmouth Herald. speekin of the meeting says: The meeting was tian lover by Rev. J. A. Gordon, of the Milton | Baptist Church, who conveyed to the audience | the regrets on acoount of unavoidable absence, ifrom Rev. A. Cohoon, Hsbron, and Rev. Messrs. Robertson, Heartz, Lathern and 'Knolin, Yarmouth. Elequent and appropriate | addresses were made by Rev. Messrs. Clark, | Goodspeed, McGregor and Normandy. Baptist |Revy. Mr. Borden, Wesleyan, Arcadia; and | Revs. Mr. Shipperly, Chebogue, and A, Me- iGregor, Yarmouth, Congregational. The | Rev. gentlemen all expressed their deop regret lupon the approashing departure from our | midst of the Rev. Mr. Lavers, who during | his ministry in Yarmouth County had become | endeared to his brethern by his faithful dis- leharge of Christian work in his own denomi- ination, and in his position as a minister of the Gospel has with his brethern of other per- suasions ever maintained the utimost cordiality and sympathy. ‘the formation of such a Society. Hon. D. -Ferguason being present was called upon ‘to give his opinion om the question and in ‘an excelent address ably advocated the formation of such societies. He said the question of agricultural Education wes every day becoming of greater importance and that the Farmers of every section of the Island would do well to avail them- selves of every opportunity of learning mere about there business. He spoke of the success that had attended the shipping of cattle and sheep to England this present year, and ssid he believed we soon would have a regular line of steamers engaged in that business, that in order to avail ourselves of the opportunity of selling in the English markets we must improve our stock, as it had been clearly demon- strated that only the best quality of cattle could profitably be exported to that market, that we must endeavor to improve our exports, as in the markets of England we will meet keen competition from all quarters of the globe and that the best arti- cle will always command the highest price. He considered the formation of Agricul- tural Societies would lead to the introduc- tion of new and improved stock; for, where- as few farmers can afford to pay $50.00 fer a pure bred bull calf, a society could do so, and the members of the club would have the benefit of his service. He said he was very glad to see a move made in this mat- ter, and hoped that the society would be very successfu!, and promised any help he could give towards that object. The Chairman being requested to give his views on the question said he had

made a move in the same direction some time last year and quoted from a letier he had written

in the Patriot last June, advocating the formation of farmers’ clubs. He considered that a society would be of great benefi’ and would support it. The following reso- lutions were then carried unanimous!y:

Moved by George F. Owen, seconded by J. McNeill, that this meeting considers ii desirable to form an Agricultural Society at Cardigan Bridge.

Moved by Donald Stewart, Esq , sec- onded by Mr. John Smith, that the next meeting be held on Thursday, the 1st day of December next, and the hour of seven o'clock, p. m.

Hon. D. Ferguson said that he would, on that oceasion, deliver a short address on agriculture, and hoped then to see the society fairly organized.

After moving a vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting adjourned. Com.

Canapa’s CaTTLe Traps. —Latest cable ad- vices from Glasgow quote best qualities of Canadian cattle at 7d. @ 74d., and Liverpool prices were quoted at 7d. to 73d. per Ib. live weight. Regarding dressed beef, it is stated that a considerable decline bas lately been experienced in Liverpool, where prices are said to have fallen from 6d. two weeks ago to 34d. @ 4d. at the latter part of last week. The shi) ments of cattle from Boston last we k were 416 head, against 662 for the week pre- vious. Of dressed beef the shipments were only 809 quarters against 1,382 grs. for the previous week. The first shipment of live hogs from Boston for a long time was made last week on the Sumatra, and numbered 240,— Halifax Lferald.

TuE Bishop of Manchester, commenting en the conduct of the late Capt. Strachan, of the Cyprian, whe, when his vessel was going down, gave the only life preserver he had to a little stowaway, and lost bis life in eonse- quence, said: “If this hfe were the end of all things, if there was nothing beyond the grave, perhaps they might say he (Captain Strachan) was a fool, But if there was a hereafter, and if self-cacrifice was a law of Christian duty, he thought that man would be one to whom the Lord of the Harvest would say one day, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant.’” Certain peop'e say selfishness prempts all good deeds.
