Bioop Poisoxninc.—The Halifax Echo says: A nine-year old girl named Smith, daughter of James Smith, of Sambro, N 8, hada needle run in her foot a short time ago, and it was in her flesh a couple of days before she managed to pull it out with ber teeth. A little later the wound began to pain, and became so violent that ehe informed her parents. She was brought to the city and Drs. Gow and Purcell called but they found a bad case of blood poisoning. An operation was _per- formed, but the poisoning had gone too far and the poor little child died yesterday.

PUBLIC OPINION SPEAKS,

Mr. Epiror,— The fact that the Hon. J. J. Curran, Solicitor General-of Canada, has been meanly ani unmanly attacked in the columns of the leading Grit organ of Nova Scotia, the Halifax Chronicle, is quite sutlicient to show that bis opponents are afraid to combat his views on leading questions openly and in a manly way. It is, therefure, pleasing to hear that Mr. Curran’s Conservative friends purpose to present him with a requisition, asking him to address a Charlottetown audience onthe leading party questions affecting all classes and creeds in the Dominion. That Mr. Curran is an orator of no mear order has been fully demonstrated on pre- vious Occasions, aud we hare no doubt that his address in Charlottetown at an early day will be a rare treat. The su gyes- tion of your correspondent “Fairplay” on this point is timely, and endorsed by every fair-minded man inthe community. A speech such as Mr. Curran is capable of delivering is just what is wanted by the people at this juncture.

The Chicago Presbytery has declared in favor of the use of unfermented w'ne in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. The main argument appears to have been that it was not consistent for the church to condemn the use of intoxicants from the pulpit and make use of them at the Communion table. The theory that the wine mentioned in the New Testament was unfermented juice of the*grape was not advanced,

Marsham Adams is the author of this latest discovery, and he has published a book in which he convinces himself that he is right in his identification of the long- sought cradle of the human race. The postal law, however, says “the Postmaster-General mav, with or without previous advertisement, con- tract with any railway or steamboat for the conveying of the mails; but all con- trects involving payments of a larger sum van a thousand dollars shall be submitted to the Governor-in—Council.” Now it is evident, in the first place, that Parlia ment has voted money for the carriage of the mails; and, in the second »lace, that the order-in-Council was not an over-riding of the Parliamentary control of the sup- plies, Lut a compliance with the statute which provides that if, in the expendfng of the acontract necessitating a larger outlay than a thousand dollars shall be entered into, the Governor-in- Conneil, and not the minister ‘alone, shail ratify the arrangement. As a matter of fact, the Government cannot spend by or- der in-Couneil money that Parliament has not voted. The Auditor-General sees to it that no such unauthorized outlay is made. The two vreat mail carriers are the Grand Trunk railway and the Canadian Pacific. For each road a scale of rates is in foree. The rate for the main line of the Grand Trank Railway is $160 per mile per annuin, and for the branches $80 per mile. As regards the Canadian Pacific the rate is $105 per mile for the main line, or $55 less than to the Grand Trunk, while for the branches it is $37 per mile, or 943 less than the Grand Trunk. These fig- ures will bear comparison with those paid elsewhere. The United States gives $200 per mile for the carrying of the mails onthe Northern Pacific; $460 per mile for the same service the Sonthern ; and $680 per mi’e fora like service on the Union Pacific. It must be remem- bered that the railways are required to provide mail cars, and that every mile for which the lump sum is paid yearly has to he traversed several times a day. The Canadian Pacitic has, it seems, sought an the ground that 1t 15 paid mueh less per mile for its service than is the Grand Trank. Its statement
