““Cavadian Opinion is not, so far as can be judged, by any means so anxious for reciprocity with the United States as it seen.> io have beenin the past. It has been tuunght by the logic of events that United States commercial hostility can affect Canada trade only in a very minor way. it would, it is believed, prefer that the Government would recognize this fact and decline to send further

And now that it has been adopted, it seems to be regarded by its authors as an unsatisfectory alternative, for they are to mnew their efforts to get into closer commercia) relations with the Uni ed States. What are their chances? On our side we have a reciprocity scheme which provides that, with certain excep- tions, the goods of any country whose tarifi is on the whole not higher than our minimum tariff shal] be admitted here at the rates of duties prescribed in the latter. On the United States’ side there isa reciprocity scheme embodied in _ the Divg'ey Act, under which the President may enter into a treaty agreeing to reduce the regular duties 20 per cent on such articles as may be included in ihe’ con- tract. or agreeing to add to the free list classes of articles that are not the paturs! product of the United States. As; we have no class of natural products not also produced in the United States, a reci- procity treaty such as that provided for in the Dingley Act would not give us any further advantage of the Unnted States free list than we now have. Therefore the two reciprocity schemes compare thus: we offer a cut of 25 percent. on our low duties; the United States offers a cut of 20 ver cent,ou its high duties. The two ffoers are far apart. None but a 16 to ] enthusiast could see anything like equal- ity between them.”

These are points to be noted by the Patriot and the public.

Canada is making a good show at the Agricultural Exhibition in St. Paul, Min- nesota, and those who see it epeak very highly ofit. A correspondent says of it: ‘in beauty of exhibits it knock- out the Great Northern and Northern Pacific, who have made special efforts for this occasion. The papers speak very favorably of it, and the Nationa! Congress of Farmers, now meeting here, have visited it in a body.
