A CORRESPONDENT of the Argus at Vic- toria Cress accuses the Commissioner of Public Works of unfairness in the letting of a contractfer the repairs of abridge. The simple facts are, we believe, that the repairs alluded to were sold at auction by the Super- visor, subject to the approval of the Com- missioner, for $124. This sum was so much larger than ‘‘ the estimate,” that there was reason to suspect ‘‘a ring.” The sale.was therefore ‘‘ quashed ;”’ and an agreement was made with Mr. Power to do precisely the same work for $70. By adopting this course, the Commissioner saved $54 to the tax payers. No deubt the Argus will eor- rect the wrong impression which its corres- pondent conveys. ,

The Beef of America.

Messrs. Reed and Pell, the Agricultural Commissioners from England to America last year, say in their report on the cattle and beef questions :—-** With such oppor- tunities, and by systematic grading with purer breeds, the raisingjof good cattle will develup,engrmously. It is almost impes- sible tv approximate the rate of increase, so larze is the importation of thoroughbred bulls in the West. Every bull that crosses the Mississippi adds enormously directly, and still more so indirectly, to the beef- producing powers of the Plains. It is not so much an increase in quantity as in quality that we shall need to meet. The actual number of cattle that can be sent to the English market is a mere drop in the bucket in comparison with the numbers that the farmers on the American contin- ent possess. With’ systematic breed- ing it is safe to say that in ten years from this time the Americans will have ten times as many cattle suited for our home markets in comparison with the pre- sont. I do not mean that the competition will increase ten times; for it must be un- derstwod that it is likely that, with prosper- ous times, the price of good beef and mut- ton will rise materially in the States and Canaia. At present a first rate article rules very high and is exceedingly scarce. With the price of every rising in value it is almost certain that beef and mutton must also be effectetl. With an increased demand at home, and a certainty of ocean freights increasing considerably, there is little fear of meat*being brought across the Atlantic at the prices ruling during the last two years. One fact, however, is certain, what, ever may be the surplus of butcher's meat on the other side of the Atlantic, to Eng- land it must come just as surely as the evertiow of American granaries crosses the ocean to feed the millions in our manufac- turing cities.”

Tar Meadelssohn uintette, Club has been performing in Halifax and* has received from the press some very high en- comiums. One veteran critic says that al- though after more than a quarter of a cen- tury there is only one of the original performers left the efficiency of the club so tar from being impaired, has been enhanced. This is high praise, and may be accepted as a guarantee of the rich ntusical treat in store for those who attend at the Academy of Music to-morrow night.

Tur meeting last night was a grand suc- cess. Hon. H. Beer was called to the chair, In afew well chosen words the chairman stated the object of meeting. We were happily met together, he said, irrespective of creed or Politics, to enter aur united pro- test against the rum curse, and to hear the views of well known friends of temperance on the merits of the new Temperance Act, about to be tested in this County.

G. W. Mitiner, Esq., was pleased to see such a large meeting. The Temperance men of Queen’s County, may never have such a favorable opportunity as the present of accepting a Prohibitory Law. If we stay; at home and allow the enemy to triumph on the 23rd we must remain beaten for at least 3 years. But if we go into the battle ag Highland soldiers go, shoulder to shoulder, the victory will be a grand one.

Look Out broke at the quar- ter, but caught quickly and came up on Fred’s quarter, but Fred responded to a lift from his jockey, and spurted ahead and continued so to spurt as Look Out touched his quarter and finished the heat in 2.35—thus making the best mile heat ever trotted on a half-mile course in the Maritime Provinces. In the fourth heat Fred broke at the turn and Look out made a good lead. Fred collared him after pass- ing the quarter, and both passed the half mile neck-and-neck, and trotted in this position until nearing the quarter, when Leok Ont broke and Fred went to the fore in grand style. The dash down the home- stretch was most exciting and the finish such as is seldom seen in the Provinges. Fred made this heat in 2.36, with Look Out at hiswheel. The race, which was awarded to Fred, was pronounced by all to be the best, most interesting and orderly ever witnessed on the Island.

The cash receipts at Ottawa for the first ten days of September were :—

The increase over the corresponding ten days in 1879 is $300,000 for Customs and $75,000 for Excise—say $375,000; the revenue in fact having nearly doubled.

The receipts for Customs and Excise in July and August, 1879, amounted to $3, 122,- 018, while for the same two months in 1880, they footed up $4,559,359. The comparison to the 10th August, therefore, stood as fol- lows :—

For in- stance, we may say that the freight receipts at St. John station of the Intercolonial Rail- way were, in round numbers, $10,000 more in August, 1880, than in Augnst of last year.

That the general business of the country is marching steadily onward is apparent from the increase of the earnings ef all the rail- roads. The Grand Trunk, tor instance, shows for the week ending Sept. 7, an increase of $40,403 over the corresponding week last year. The aggregate increase for thirty-six weeks is $1,352,943. These figures speak fer themselyes. There is new life in the country, let the croakers croak ever so dismally.
