The House of Commons has at l.1.=l put its stamp of approval on the 310 old age pensions increase, after an acrimonious controversy in the preliminary stages of the bill that reflected no credit on anybody. ii i. worth recalling this incident, if oniv as a warning example of how debate can degenerate into rulcar shouting and name-calling. regardless of the issue in dispute. nhich in this case was of grave con- cern to hundred: of thousands of our aged citizens.

Worth recalling. too. is the fact that one hackbencher, Mr. Colin Cameron. NDP member for Na- nsimo-(‘owicham rose to the occas- ion. and like a school-master taming an unruly mob of delinquents, brought the disputants to their sonses. His caustic words fell like a whip on bare backs.

If in late years he has had a number of grievous troubles, it is not likely that a successor would find the go- ing anv easier. His illness at this time. indeed, may serve to remind his followers that they could go farther and late worse in their choice of a leader. It could. on the other hand. influence Mr. Macmillan in deciding. on his own account. to call it a day.
