The genera! intelligence from California is unimportant. Politics oceupied the public mind to the exclusion of other subjects. In San Francisco there Wasa movement on foot to unite various elements in opposition'to the Democrats, who are the bitter enemice of the Vigilance Committee. It was
somewhat doubtful, however, whether the project would
succeed,
Messrs. John L. Durkee and Charles E. Rand had been tried on a charge of piracy, for assisting in the removal of the State arms from on board the schooner Julia, in the harbour of San Francisco, during the reign of the Vigilants. The jury rendered a verdict of acquittal after but five minutes deliberation.
Trade was dull at San Francisco; but with the removal of social disorders, a return of business activity was confi- dently looked for.
On the 5th a destructive fire broke out in Marysville, in which some forty buildings, mostly occupied by Mexicans and Chinese, were destroyed.
The town of Colusi was entirely destroyed by fire about the same time.
From all portions of the mining regions we hear the most favourable accounts.
Fxtensive preparations are being made, in anticipation of the rainy season, to work the dry gulches and ravines where there is no water. We continually hear of rich strikes, and it is probable that there never were more favourable prospvcts in the mining region than there are at present. '
From New Granada we learn that Gov. Calro was inau- gurated at Panama on the 11th instant. This event insures 2 peaceful condition of things on the Isthmus for some time

Sueprac Ratnway.—We are happy to learn that the | Railway between Shediac and the Bend is progressing more | rapidly than was anticipated. Mr. Walker, of Quebec, the | contractor at the Shediae end of the line, has 300 men at work, and adds to their number daily. He is pushing on} most vigorously. Theother two contractors have each nearly | the same number, and we observe that Mr. Brookfield, the | contractor near the Bend, has advertised for 200 more men | in Prinee Edward Island.

Dearn ny Lavpaycom.—Yesterday morning an inquest was held before Jacob Wortman, Esq., Coroner, and a Jury, on view of the body of Nathaniel Purinton, who died suddenly on Tuesday evening about 8 o'clock. the following facts were elicited:—On Tuesday afternoon between 4 und 5 o’elock, deceased went to the shop of Messrs. Miles & Wood, Druggists, aud procured an ounce of Laud- anum from Abraham Wood, a young lad in the employment of M. & W., and in a short time alterwards retired to bed ; no suspicion, however, was excited until tea-time, when Mr. Purinton’s daughter-in-law went to his bed-room with a cup of tea, thinking the old gentleman might be unwe!l and did not wish to get up, alarmed, however, by his appearance, she
communicated with the rest of the family immediately, but | _
it was too late, and before medical aid could be procured he had ceased to breathe. Various causes have been assigned for the commission of the rash act, but we forbear making any comments.— Westmorland Times, Oct. 9.
NOVA SCOTIA. Monper.—Last Monday evening, the 6th instant, a number of persons assembled at one of the houses a few yards above the railway depot, to attend a raffle. The ineeting seems to have been attended by a'l the drinking and noise usual on such occasions. Oue George Izat, who re- sided in a part of the same house, became, from some cause which we have not heard, exasperated with some of the party. A little after midnight a number of them went out of the house to go home, but still remained about the door outside, making, it is said, a good deal of disturbance. About this time Izat came down stairs from his room and fired a gun at the crowd. <A slug with which it was loaded took effect in the groin of a young man named McKeown, or Mc- Ewen, a painter, of this city. The injury resulted in death in avery short space of time. Immediately after committing the act, [zat returned to his room, armed himself, and about one o'clock in the morning crossed the Narrows in a boat, to the Dartmouth side. On Tuesday a Coroner’s inquest was held upon the body of the deceased, and a verdict of * wilful murder” was returned, against Izat. Mr. Wilson the Deputy Sheriff of this county, was immediately despatched in pursuit of the fugitive. Izat having the reputation of being a bold, determined man and being armed, it was sup- posed that he would not be taken without difficulty, if at all. Such was not the case. After beating about the country all day Wednesday, Wilson discovered the object of his search in the house of a Mr. Brown, at Musquodoboit.. On learn- ing that Wilson was about the premises, Izat expressed a wish to see him, and on doing so immediately gave himself up. He was brought to town the following day and lodged in jail.— Acadian Recorder.
