| Funeral of Hon. John Longworth.

At a meeting of the Law Society, held this forenoon, it resolved that the members, as a tribute of respect for the memory of the late Hon. John Longworth, should attend his funeral in their robes. Mr. Longworth was President of th Society since its foundation until his ac- ceptance of the office of Prothonotary last summer, and consequent retirement from the active practice «f his profession.

United States Debt.

Mr. Manning, the new secretary of the United States treasury, has adopted a new form in the monthiy statement of the public debt, the result of which is to repre- sent the debt as nearly a hundred millions greater than appeared in the old arrange- ment of the accounts. The interest-bear- ing deht at the close of March, placed at $1,19%6,149,600 by the old form, is increased by Mr. Manning to $1.260,773,112, by the addition of $64,623,572, the amount of bonds issued to the Pacific railways, and the liability arising out of which appears not to have been considered in making up the debt statements up to this time. Tae amount of debt upon which interest has since maturity is $4 951,505, the same in each case, but the debi bearing no interest, that is to say the legal-tender

SITUATION OF THE TROOPS.

An Ottawa despatch of the 12th inst, says: ‘Gen. Middleton has reached within a few miles of Humboldt. Gen. Laurie caught ip to him last night at six o'clock. \liddleton has with him, or closely fo'low- ing him up, 860 men, including 46 expert scouts, who form the advance guard. He ‘xpects to reach the river and the enemy on Wednesday or Thursday. Three steamers and twenty scows will take the troops, who marched to-day from Swift Current to tha Saska’che wan, to meet the boats. They take two Gatling guns, and will drop down the men to meet Gep. Middleton at Clark's crossing. Crowfoot, chief of the Blackfeet, has sent . telegram to Sir John A. Macdonald, stating that he would keep faith with the ‘yreat mother,’ and not make war on whites. His young braves would spill no blood, but would goon their farms. He desired Sir John to keep the telegram to see how Crowfoot keeps his word. Middle- ton wires that Irvine 1s in Prince Albert all right, but short of horse feed and ammuni- tion. The General considers Battleford safe. Mounted police are fortifying Fort Pitt. At Calgary are Gen. Strange, Capt. Stew- art, the 65th, and Col. Smith’s battalion. Just south of Gleichen are two battalions.

At Swift Current, en route to the Sas- katchewan, are Ool. Otter, the (jueen’s Own, and half of company C. At Qu’Ap-

pelle are B Battery. At Winnipeg are Col, Scott's, the 35th andthe 90th. With Gen. Middleton are A Battery, Winnipey field battery, the 90th and the Ottawa sharp- shooters. Following behind and expected to catch up, are the 10th and Winnipeg cavalry. Others are on the road. THE SITUATION AT BATTLEFORD.

The Toronto Globe's special from Battle- ford, dated April 10, says: Since I wired you last the line has been down. It is now in good order again. Our position is very unsatisfactory. Indians raided the south part of the town on Monday, 6th April, and burned the store of Mahaffy & Clinkshell and next morning the govern- ment houses and stable besides a num ber of farm houses in the neighborhood. All settlers are in garrison here awaiting relief, but we can hold out against any band likely to attack us. Major Morris made araid on tbe half-breed camp near the town last week and captured ten men, and a number of women and children. ‘he latter are encamped near the barracks. On April 2nd the Indians at Frog Lake invited Quinn and others to a conference in their camp and shot them as soon as they entered, ‘Twenty-live police and a few settlers are entrenched in the Hudson Bay house at Fort Pittina critical condition, being threatened from all sides and no possibility of aid being sent from here. They will,however, make a stout resistance and it is hoped successfully. A party of Stony Indians captured a_ police messenger on his way to Fort Pitt and look ‘everything from him. He had to return to town. A band of Stoneys entered the settled part of the town yesterday and displayed great activity in gathering up parts and completing the raiding of the town. They opened five on the police water carts which was so steady and long continued that the cannon was sent to cover

the carts. A line of skirmishers also took a position on the bank, and |their efforts were crowned with the killing of two Indians and _ three horses. Noue of our boys were hurt. The

homesteads at Gardemis Crossing, north of Granden. In short the whole northern ; country is in a bad state.

A journal reporter had the good fortune to gain admission to a Fenian rendezvous in the Fourth Ward last evening. ‘John Murray,” the name by which Louis Riel’s agent is known, was there. He said his mizsion had been a suecess, having received substantial cvidence that the dynamite faction of New York and vicinity meant business. They had shown it, he said, by contributing $10,000, 2,000 improved re- 'peating rifles, two gatling guns and 500 “men, most of which and whom were on the | way to the seat of war. | It was learned positively that Louis Riel was in this city two months ago. He came on for consultation with the leaders

of the various Irish organizations, with whom he has been in communication for two years. Riel, it is said, had a prolong- ed conference with Patrick Ford, who promised him substantial sid in case he revolted against the Kuglish Government. Among those he enlisted to his aid were Captain John McCatterty, ‘‘Rocky Moun- tain” O'Brien, P. J. Sheridan, of Colorado; P. W. Dunne, of Chicago; O'Donovan Rossa, ex-Congressman John F. Finnerty, of Chicago; Judge John Brennan, Sioux City, le.; Colonel Allyward, General Mce- Adaras, of St. Louis, and John Walsh, the noted Fenian organizer, who was arrested in France for supposed complicity in the Phoenix Park tragedy.
