seven of the eight dashes raced. Dominator Pick who captured the C pace in straight dashes lowered his mark in both trips, so that meant that six horses came out of Wednesday afternoon’s eard with brand new race records.

This record smashing has become commonplace at Char- wttetown Driving Park this year and today and tomorrow you san look for more records to topple. The track has been kept -in excellent-shape and caretaker Everett Hastings and his crew are mdeed deserving of commendation. ‘

Old Home Week is always a mighty rough one for these men but when you run into weather like Tuesday he work is made all the harder. Sea trout” fishing requires extreme patience and I find, when angling for trout in either salt or fresh water, that Patience ceases to be a virtue after an hour or less if signs of co-operation are not forthcom- ing. In a duck or goose blind its quite different. I have waited it out all day on occasion.

I prefer fresh water trouting. In a dam there is always some- thing to distract ones attention . -@ red-winged black bird sway- ing on a flag top a brood of ducks dabbling in the reeds or a muskrat watching the boat with bis tail cocked at a saucy angle. Its a strange thing about dams. There is a right and a trong time to fish them. A certain wind, ex- cept an east or Nor’east. fav- ours most any.dam. The dam I favour its a south, sou'west accompanied by a low cloud scud and a misty rain. If conditions are right one may expect some good sport. If not its pretty well a waste of time except maybe for a short period between deep dusk and night. One would be led to believe that there wasn't a trout in the water on ordin- ary days.

A STRIKE

On Wednesday morning Aug- ust 5th I was on the prowl en joying a short holiday. I looked a dam over that I knew held its share of trout but the wind was wrong It appeared to vary be- tween due north and nor’west a direction that did not favour this particular stretch of water. I walked back to the car with the full intention of pulling out. Sud- denly the thought struck me: “You have nothing to do and all day to do it in so why not launch the boat and have a spot of exer- cise’’ I tried out the old reliab les. .a dark Montreal with a silver body and a Parmachene Pelle. Not a move. Next an Orange Shrimp followed by other offerings. Still no sign of life. As a last resort I reverted back te the Montreal and Belle. I was idly drifting with a drizzly rain at my back, making dosultory casts and thinking about- every~ thing expect trout when ‘Wham I had a strike. . Kt wasn't a large trout. . just M wasn’t a large trout. . just a@ nine incher. . but it hit the

| fly with a vengeance. They sure ;went_on a hitting spree. Some

would come a foot out of the wat- er. Others would roll with their backs out of the water like a por- poise following a ship at sea. I used to spend hours at the rail watching them during the Atlan- tie crossing in 1914. When the count reached 8 or 9 I began to
