One hundred and sixty-two years ago on the eve of the publication of his poems, Burns was greatly discouraged. He had parted with "his Jean" and had tried to forget her in dissipations oftimes held up in his disfavour. l-le was prepared to say farewell to Scotland and had booked passage to Jamaica. Hi! Poems quickly captured the hearts of his contemporaries and he was soon a popular and success- ful man. Cancelling his passage, Burn! turned acorn to recording his views of truth and justice.

Burns became a great national- ist, and though he hated wars as he hated hell, he joined the, local militia and took an active port in all military affairs. His humour did not desert him even on his deathbed, for when the Captain of his company called upon him. he told him that he hoped the awkward squad would not be selected to fire over his grave. Burns was buried in the scarlet uniform of a British soldier.

Dr. Macmillan said that man is a creature of history, and we must be wary of those who would up- root him to make everything new. Burns learned his creed. and drew his courage from the hills and glensthe loved, and he knew man to be an individual with roots not a cut flower. The ills of the world may belt be remedied by common sense, remembering that our child- ren come after us and we must leave them the heritage of liberty so dearly bought by our forefathers and upheld by true thinkers.
