tons, also in excess of Antwerp, but both Hull and Glasgow are below, witb

respectively 1,875,000 and 2,110,000 tons. The remarkable growth of

Antwerp is partly due to its position as the embarking point from the conti- nent of Europe to America, and partly also to the recent additions and changes which have been carried out there, and which are now almost completed. This

is so well known that vessels bound for |

Switzerland with acargo of corn from Russia, pass Marseiiles and g 2000 miles outof their way for the purpose of unloading at Antworp. Neo other port in fact offers the same facilities. There is not another place in the world where fifty vessels of 3.000 tons can come alongside as easy as the penny boats on the Thames run into the land~ ing Many important running from Breman and Hamburg, the Peninsular and Oriental Company, and a great many English lect this port to complete their cargo and take on their psssengers,

Remarkable Accident. NECESSITATING THE 5,000 POUND SAFE FROM A STORY WINDOW.

A remarkable accident happened in New York on Saturday. A safe weigh- ing two tons and a half was being hoist- ed to the fourth story of a building on Broadway, and had reached the desired height waen a workman at the window to which it was to pass, and who had being guiding the ponderous mass, sud- denly gave a piercing and astonishing shriek that startled the crowd that were watching the operation. A glance at the writing form of the workman, who groaned and screamed with paia, show- ed what had happened. He had taken hold of the pulley to swing the safe,and his fingers had caught in the rope and been drawninto the sheaves of the block. His fellow workmen knew that to turn the winch, either to hoist or lower the safe, might result in crush-~ ing the poor fellow’s hand to a pulp. There was enly one thing to co—the ropes must be eut and the safe allowed to drop to the sidewalk. As quickly as possible the sidewalks and the road- way werecleared of pedestrians and vehicles. Two stout fellows lay out upon the sill and held the bedy of their suffering comrade so that he would not be carried dewn with the safe. Then the ropes were quickly severed close to the block, The man’s hand was relcas- ed, ani he was drawn, half-fainting,into the room and carried to a surgeon’s. The big safe crushed through the side- walk, smashing a heavy flag-stone into powder, and buried itselfin the earthy floor of a vault under the street. The safe was not materially injured, and the workman’s wounds are not danger- ous,

A Pedler’s Romance.

THE STRANGE STORY OF A SWISS GEN~ TLEMAN—A SLIGHTED LOVE AXD TER- RIBLE VOW.

The famous deaf and dumb knick= knack pedler who, during the past fourteen years, attracted so much at- tention on London Bridge, is dead, and the subject of the latest sensation, He died in the Southwark work-house,near the south end of the bridge. Despite his infirmities he managed to support himself by his small sales, and, secur- ing official and police favor by the gentleness of his demeanor and the in- telligenvo of his conduct, he was allow. ed to occupy the same post on the great thoroughfure from year to year. Be- fore his death, the pedler beckoned to his cot, one of the hospital attendants, and terrified him by speaking to him. When the attendant recovered trom his astonishment, the beggar confessed that his deafness and dumbness had been feigned. He said he was a Swiss gentleman of fortune and belonged to one of the best families in the republic. When a young man he was betrothed to a beautifaland accomplished girl. He was possessed of a most violent temper, and, ip a jover’s quarrel one

day over a_ triffe, he so wounded the girl by the _ bitterness of his invective that she fell ill. The reproaches of his friends for his

cruel conduct stung so that he became melancholy from remorse and left home. He then resolved to punish himself.
