THE MONSTER AND THE HAUNTED HOUSE

It stood on a high hill overlook- ing a section of country now known as Lot 65. Nobody could toll when the crude dwelling had been built, but there it stood in the_ heart of a mighty wood belt with only the moaning wind and a terrible mon- ster of unknown origin to keep it company. -

The wilderness shack (so the story goes) was built by a wizard so evil that the good Lord I-llm- self had him transformed into a creature that was half man yet hall’ beast.

Perhaps the Indians through the forests may have known and feared this strange thing; but to a party of white men goes the credit for tracing down the evil one they had heard about but had never seen. But the wick- ed acts which had filled the land with violence and often bloodshed could, they were certain, be traced to the monster who dwelt alone in the forest.

\Vhcn the little party of five hunters came upon the awful crea- ture thcy were filled with silent wonder and great fear. These white men who looked upon the housc of mystery’ and its strange inhabitant believed they had dis- covered tho abode of the devil.

Sprawled out in a corner of the shack and fast aslcep, lay a huge form the like of which the iiuntcijs had ncvcr scou. The partly closezl cycs were as largo as the bottom of a (irinkiiig cup, while from its huge mouth protruded several teeth which were pointed iikc a dog's and as wiiito as polished ivory.
