Meruopist News.—From the we learn that the Rev. Mr. accepted a call to Woodstock, same paper reports also that Revs. W. E. Reynolds and D. H. Lodge, of P. E Island, are seeking transfers—the former to Ontario, and the latter to Nova Scotia; also that Rev. Mr. Embree, President of the Newfoundland Conference, is anxious to be transferred to the N. B. and P. E. I. territory.

4A Voice rrom Ma4rtne.—The inyestigations of the Bangor Commercial serve to confirm the statement of the St. John Suu that there is no very vigorous sentiment in New Bruns- wick for Commercial Union. The Commercial found only one vigorous supporter of it, and he seems to be an annevaiiouist as well as unionist. Most of the gentlemen conversed with were in favor of the renewal of the Reci- procity Treaty of 1854, which, in view of the tecent declaration of the Halifax Chronicle that the Dominion got a good deal more ont of that arrangement than the United States, is not surprising.— Portland, Me., Press.

Tue Last Sap Rires.—The mortal remains of the late Rev. Dr. Grant were consigned to their last resting place in the graveyard at Cardigan to-day. His Lordship Bishop Mc- Intyre and the majority of the clergymen of the diocese were present, and took part in the ceremonies usual on such occasions. Sisters St. Cornelia and Angelina, Superiors of the Convent de Notre Dome, and St. Joseph, vespectively, were also present. The funeral sermon was, we understand, preached by

P., upon the honor of a baronetey which he has just received at the hands of Her Majesty. Not alone by his marriage in 1873 with the daughter of Sir George Stephen, has Mr. Northcote long been associated with Canada and Canadians. As early as 1871 he was at- tached to the Marquis of Ripon’s special mission to arrange the Alabama treaty, and in the years immediately following he was secretary to Her Majesty's Claim Commission under the Treaty of Washington. President Grevy this forenoon informed the Ministerial Council that in view of the change in the situation he did not propose to make a communication to parliament to- day. The communication Grevy was to make was a letter resigning the presidency of the Republic.

M. Rouvier will announce this decision of M. Grevy to the Chamber of Deputies and will again tender the resignaticn of the Cabinet,

It is reported that President Grevy shortly form a new ministry.

LATER.

The excitement. in the city is intense. <A mob gathered in front of the Palace Elysee crying for the President to resign. A revolution demonstration is expected. Troops guard the entrance to the Palace. The crowds in front of the Palace Bourbon became so demonstrative that cavalry was obliged to charge them. There was a big demonstration in front: of the Russian Embassy to-day, crowds shouting ** Vive le Russia.”” The police dispersed the gathering. A council was held at the Elysee Palace after the second sitting of the Chamber. Rouvier explained the bearing of the vote. Grevy asked each Minister his opinion. All said immediate resignation was peremptory. Grevy replied the Chamber had brought about the exist- ing situation, and the Chamber must bear the responsibility before the judgment seat of history. No doubt js entertained that the President will resign. The Congress meets on Saturday.

Orrawa, Dec. 1. The Government steamer Lansdowne has been ordered to perform winter service between Pictou and Georgetown. The Northern Light will be kept in readiness at Georgetown in case of emergeucy.

The Hay Claim

Montreal, Dec. 1.

The French Chamber of Commerce here have adopted a resolution asking Sir Char- les Tupper, Canadian representative on the Fishery Commission, to [demand pay- ment by the American Government of the claim against it for hay duties on the same principal thatthe United Ssates asked, and obtained reimbursement from Canada of con- siderable sums gtolen by St. Albarg raiders payment by Great Britain of the Alabama claims.

The Situation in Russia.

St. Pererspure, Dec. 1.

The Ministry have asked the Czar whether, in view of the political situation, it is desirable to hold an Educational Congress in 1888, or postpone it to 188%. The Czar replied that it could be held next year. He said the political outlook was satisfactory. There was no fear of new complications.

“Proposals for Construction of Water W orks,” ‘‘Proposals for Water Pipes,” &c., as the case may be, will be received at this office until noon on

instant, as follows :—

(a) For what amount the work will be con- structed, to be owned by the City, the offers to be made in accordance with conditions as to secur- ity and otherwise contained in forms of Proposal and the Specifications and Plans to be seen at the Office of the Weter Commissioners for the City of Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island, or at the oftice of their Engineer, M. M, Tidd. Esq.. 10 Tremont Street. Boston, Mass., after the 7th instant. for the cast iron pipes and pipe laying; and after the 14th instant for the balance of the specifications and plans, which will include Res- ervoits, Gates end Hydrants, excepting those for the pumping station, which will be ready on the 25th instant. Builders may offer for the whole work, or for the separate parts indicated in the forms of Proposal, but those ojfering for the whole work will be required to fill up and sign each of the said forms; or

(b) For what annual subsidy a private company will supply the said City for fire purposes and for watering the streets with eighty frost-proof hydrants, having a pressure sufficient to throw water toa height of at least sixty feet in every part of the City, and the annual rate for each additional hydrant which the said City may from time to time require; as also the Maximum annual rate per faucet at which the company will supply water to citizens for private use, each tender to expressly stipulate that the water will be taken from ‘the sources, and the whole work be done accordiug to the specifications and plans referred to in paragraph (a); of

(c) For what amount the work wii!l be con- structed ia be owned by the City; or for what annual subsids:a private company will supply the said city fcr fire purposes and private use as mentioned in paragraph (b), the bidder to name his source of water supply, and accompany his tender with plaus and specifications.

Each tender under paragraphs (b) and (c) must be accompanied by an accepted bank cheque, payable to the order of the Water Commissionera for the City of Charlottetown for the sum of Five Thousand Dollers. This cheque will he forfeited if the party decline the contract, or fail to com- plete the work contracted for, and will be returned in (‘ase of non-acceptance of tender.
