Earle MacDonald ex- tended a. welcome on behalf of the city. He had not expectedto at- tend aa he had been away and thought someone else would be present to carry on for him. How- ever. he said "They'll have to do it soon". Opening Discussion

The opening discussion of the meeting saw a panel choose the subject "Planning in General". The members were chairman Phillip Dumaresq. Halifax. W.A. Gates. Halifax. P.W. Hyndinan. Char- lottetown. and U. .1. Harrington. Halifax. Starting the dlscuuloli Mr. Hyndman spoke on the polit- ical aspects of planning and said he was not referring to party pol- itics. but to the motivation and the rcactio of the public.

Despite criticism. he said. plan- ning had nothing to do with soc- lalism as the theory went back many years. This city was com- pletely ' d in the 18th cent- ury. but it only went from the waterfront to Euston Street. with the growth beyond that the city

Calls onlif N. To Overrule Iran Orir

LONDON. Sept. 29 - (Saturdays - (AP) - Britain today branded the British-Iranian oil crisis 8. threat to world peace and said she would urgently ask the United Na- tions Securlty Council to inter- vene.

Britain will call upon the Sec- urityfcouncil to overrule Iran's order expelling 350 British tech- niclans from the Abadan refinery area by Oct. 4.

A statement by the Foreign Of- fice said that the expulsion order "has created a situation which might well be thought to justify the use of force in order to pre- serve the Britlsh rights and in- terests involved." It added:

"His majesty's government would however, be reluctant to take any action which might have the ef- fect of weakening the authority of the United Nations, on whose principles their policy is based.

"They have therefore decided that the right course in the pres- ent.clrcumstances is to bring the situation urgently before the Sec- urity Council. which is the appro- priate body to deal with matters likely to endanger the mainten-

ance of international peace and security." The statement said that. ar-

rangements are being made to summon a meeting of the Secur- ity Ccuncli as soon as possible.

(In New York informed quart- ers said the U. N. Security Coun- cil probably will meet Monday or Tuesday on the British-Iranian oil dispute. The British request for council action had not been receiv- ed there and officials would not comment for publication until they saw the text.)

New Seam of Coal Found In Inverness

INVERNESS. N.S.. Sept. 28 - (OP) -- A five-foot seam of coal has been discovered under the centre of this Cape Breton mining town, officials reported tonight.

A spokesman said the quality of the coal was excellent, and he felt development of the new scam would assure security for the town's populace.

Sausage - Mill Treatment Of War Veterans Denied

Mr. Padbury's allegations con- cerned chiefly the huge. lied Sunnybrook Hospital in North York. on Toronto's north- ern outskirts. He termed it little better than "a school for Tor- onto Unlversity medical students. But his criticism was extended to Westminster Hospital in London. Ont.

Mr. Plidbury'ii complaints:

An "unprecedented number" of suicides had occurred at sunny- brook during the last 18 months and that no investigation had been made.

Medical treatment was of the "sausage-mill variety."

Patients both in Sunnybrook and in Westminster received less consideration than patients In public wards of civilian hospitals.

Patients in Sunnybrook were "guinea pigs for the teaching of medical science."

Flying Officer Delmar Hoffman of R. C. A. P. Station, Summerslde, died last night about ten o'clock in the Prince County Hospital from injuries sustained in a car collis- ion at the intersection of Summer and Notre Dame Streets at three O'clock Yesterday morning. Cor- oner Dr. Austin Delaney said he would convene a Jury this morn- ing to hold an inquest.

The accident occurred when a car driven by Hoffman was pro- ceeding west on Notre Dame Street and came into collision with a Meteor taxi which was going north on Summer Street. The taxi driv- er, Mr. Wilbert DesRoches. is a patient in the hosptnl suffering from multiple bruises. His condi- tion is not serious. A passenger in

RCAF Officer Fatally Injured At S'side

the Hoffman car, Flying Officer Breault was not injured.

After the collision both cars struck electric light poles and one pole snapped off by the impact. Hoffman suffered severe head in- juries and is thought to have been thrown from the car. The taxi was the more badly damaged but the other vehicle suffered quite extensive damage as well.

Flying Officer Hoffman was 28 years of age and was a native of Vancouver. B.C. He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Alice Saunders. and two small children. He has been stationed at Summer- slde since March. 1949. He was a pilot and had an excellent war record, having done a tour of overseas duty. - S.

All mall is being withdrawn from the afternoon train service to King's County and will go on the morning truck delivery, Mr. Coyle stated.

Churchill Surprises Business-Community

IONDON. Sept. 28 --(AP) - Winston Churchill's Conservative Party surprised the business com- munity today by promising to tax excess profits to help pay for Britain's rearmament if the Con- servatives win the Oct. 25 elect- ion.

The party's election platform. known as a manifesto. pledged to halt the nationalization of in- dustry nnd to denationallze iron and steel.

Signed by Chui-clllll. the 2500- word document accused the ruling Labor Party of extrpnagances and "maintained Labor's' national- ization schemes have failed.

Former Island 0.il.il. Employee Retires At Moncloli

MONCTON. Sept. '29-C. G. Hughes employed as chief clerk and cashier in the regional treas- urers office of the Cnnndlnn Na- tional Railways at Moncton retires today after 80 years of service.

Cyril George Hughes. better known as Cy. was born at char- lottetown P. E. l. on Sept. 8. 1001. and joined the service of the rail- way as assistant pay clerk in the financial department of the rail- way at Moncton in Aug. 1921. i-le was promoted to pay clerk in May. 1923. and lo assistant paymaatcr in July. 1936. For a short time he acted in the capacity of paymaster in April. 1941. he was made chief clerk and cashier.

His father George A. Hughes. who is 95 years of age and lives in

Charlottetown. is the sole living link with the early clays of rail- roading on Prince Edward Is-

land. i-le worked on the construct- ion of the railway which new forms part of the Canadian Na- tional Raiiwsys system and when completed he was employed in the operation of the railway. retiring in Auto 1923. as chief train de- spatcher at Charlottetown.

King Continues. To Gain Strength

Sept. 3 -(Reuters)- The King continued to gain strength today. though doctors still warned he would not pass the danger period before the end of next week.

The ninth bulletin since Sun- day's operation on the King's lung said he had had another comfort- able night and Was making steady progress.

The King's lung resection could be complicated by secondary haemorrhage within a few days of Sunday's operation. one- London doctor said, but the official bul- letins indicated that nothing of that nature had taken place.

He added that the King's at- tendants would guard agalnst a re- currence of circulatory trouble in his leg through inactivity. The King suffered from bad circula- tion and underwent a leg oper- ation for it in 1946.

Britons found another encourag- ing sign of the King's recovery in the fact that Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh have decided to postpone their Canadian visit by only one week.

The presence of both the King's daughters, Princess Margaret and Princess Ellnbeth. at the racing meet at Ascot today also showed nothing was amiss.

inquest into Smilh Falalily Held last Night

A verdict that Daniel Smith came to his death on Tuesday. September 25th, on the Millvlew- Woad Islands highway, about one and a half miles east of Vernon, when the carriage in which he was driving was struck in the rear by ti truck driven by Stir- ling Hackott of Mount Albion. and that dcntli was due to severe brain and spleen injuries. 'was returned by the jury at the 111' quest held last night in Vernon Hall. No blame was attached to the driver of the truck.

The inquest was conducted by the Coroner for Queen's County. Dr. Lemuel E. Prowse, and ap- pearing for the Crown was Mr. John P. Nicholson.

The first witness to be called was Finlay A. Smith, of Newtown Caoss. son of the deceased. who said that on return from Vernon shortly after 7 pm. on the day of the accident. he met a horse and wagon, and upon recognizing his father. he stopped and spoke to him for a few minutes. He could give no estimate of the dis- tance between his car and the wagon when he walked back to talk to his father. but he did leave his motor running and the headllghts on. Before leaving the scene he noticed a vehicle ap- proaching and he dimmed his lights. and the velllcle coming towards him did the slime.
