Is it not too bad that this state of things should coatinue / No one cares to utter a word which would unnecessarily hurt the feelings of eithorof the learned Judges in question ; but fhey must be aware of the fact that the public business is suffering, and that the patience, not only of the bar, but of everyone having anything to do with our courts is becoming well nigh exhausted.

They have always been looked upon as able and impartial jurists by all classes in the Province, and have received the re- spect due to their high position; but they cannot hope to maintain that respect, if, when the hand of time has placed a limir, almost a complete bar, to their usefulness, they still endeavor to perform duties which cannot rightly be performed bat by more active men.

A correspondent at Needham, Mass., writes to the Moncton Times: Permit me through the columns of your valuable paper to say a few words of Boston and its sur- roundings. I left the lower provinces on the 16th of April of a trip to Boston and vicinity; reached here on the 17th and found my way to the town of Needham.

During last summer | was asked to come to Boston and make money, but I cannot see why it is that people run away with the idea that they get alovg here much better than they do at home. In the first place, to live here costs twice as much as it does in New Brunswick, and wages are only 50 to 75 cents better per day. In Moncton and McAdam, N. B., and Amherst, N. 8., last summer I made at the rate of $30 clear per month, while here I can’t better it, and besides clothing is high, A suit that would cost $18 in Moncton would cost $39 here, ete. Now, boys of the provinces, please take advice from a friend who has tried the matter and stay at home to do well. I dou’t blame any boy who wants to see and know the country near him, but when you have seen it, go bome and settle

A Little Advice.

Sir,—Your correspondent ‘‘Subscriber,” in yesterday’s issue, is evidently suffering with indigestion, and I know of nothing better for that fell disease than a good bi- cycle, judiciously administered. He will not be able to purchase one, it is true, for a similar sum subscribed by him towards the Square Garden, but he will find that for the extra outlay he will be amply re paid. It will help to soften his heart, and probably cure the softness of his head, and, | after he has fully mastered it, his internal apparatus will be found in a highly satis- factory condition. Try a bicycle, by all means, Mr. Subscriber, it will do you a world of good.

Are we to infer from the first point men- tioned that the modern Shorthorn stamp is not of the ‘* massive, grand” order shown by the old-time favorites? Alas! I am in- clined to think that Mr. Thornton has meant to insinuate this very truth, and I wish that, along with an adequate appre- ciation of the fact that our cattle have lost some of their chief excellencies of the past, all would note the second portion of Mr. Thornton’s reference, viz., that this ** mas- sive, grand” bull of ‘the old stamp” had adam that was ‘‘ quite one of the best milkers” in a noted herd! Truly, all great bulls and men must have great dams; and I imagine that until there is a more general return to the practice of breeding stock sires from those grand old broad- backed, deep-milking matrons of ‘‘ ye olden time,” we cannot hope to regain the reputation the Shorthorn once had of being the farmer's best, par excellence of the world; and if the bull’s dam be one of those rich, mossy roans of other days, his quality will be in no wise impaired.

That such an attempt will be in any way successfulis not at all likely, as Wilson’s forelegs were given up asa bad job several years ago by John Splan and other capable men who had him in charge. Ihaddition to this, it is not likely that a horse whose record of 2.16} was made six years ago could by any pos- sibility have much of his old time speed left, and in these days it takes a good one to hold his own in the free-to-all-class, no matter if bis operations be confined to half mile tracks. Wilson, although a fast horse was a very rough-gaited one for a trotter of such great speed, but was dead game, which helped him out of many a tight place. He was brought out by Gus Glidden, who had an interest in him, the horse having been bred by Mr. Simmons, who subsequently purchased Glidden’s interest, Wilson at that time having a record of 2.21}. In JohnjSplan’s hands he reduced this to 2.16}, and for a season was the fastest of the get of George Wilkes.

Fire at Sovuris.—About half-past nine o'clock last evening the dwelliag house of M. J. Foley, Collector of Customs at Souris, was Completely destroyed by fire. StncutarR Deara.—The Albert, N. B., Maple Leaf, says: Jobn McAnulty, 2d., of Germantown, died suddenly last Monday. He recently suffered with toothache and on April 16 went to a doctor to have the tooth extract- ed, but it was broken and the root remained. Mr. McAnulty caught cold and his head swelled, causing his death. Some say he was a sufferer from erysipelas, others are of the opinion that blood-poisoning resulted from an abscess under the partially extracted tooth.

A Nice Cater or Porice.—According to a Winnipeg despatch, Reddon, the Chief of Police at Rat Portage, who was arrested there chaiged with 1obbing the Hudson’s Bay Co’s post of three thousand dollars’ worth of furs two weeks ago, and who escaped from his captor, is still at large. Trusty and dar- ing men have been engaged to follow him and the prosecution are of opinion that he will be captured. Reddon is a desperate character and a powerful man and it is believed if he finds himself cornered, he wili fight to death rather than give himself up.

FounD Drav,—An elderly woman named Dogherty, who resides on Weymouth Street, near the railway station, was found dead by some of her neighbors this torenoon about half-past eleven o'clock, It appears that Mrs. Dogherty was in the act of going up stairs late last night when she dropped dead. Her little boy remained awake by her side on the staira all night, thinking that she was sleeping.

the little fellow became frightened and ran out of the house to one of the neighbors. He told the neighbor that he could not wake his mother. The neighbor immediately went with him to the house, where she found Mrs. Dogherty dead. Drs. MeLeod and Warburton were summoned, and on ar- rival they examined her and found that life had been extinct for eleven or twelve hous, Dr. McLeod said it would not be necessary to hold an inquest as it was unquestionable that heart disease was the cause of death.

When taken before the police magistrate he calmly and even stolidly admitted that he had par- taken too freely of fre water and that the disturbance and general hurrah in the street were in consequence thereof. This Mr. Glad- stone is not the illustrious member of the English home of commons, of course, but a
