Tux Gerorcerows CARNIVAL.—The annual Carnival in the Georgetown Skating Rink takes place on Wednesday evening next. The Artillery Brigade Band has been secured for the occa- sion, and good music may therefore be ex. pected. To Practise His Proresston.—The first meeting of the Board for the examination of candidates for admissisn to practice as Land Surveyors in this Province, was held on the 23rd and 24th inst. Mr. John P. Ball, son of John Ball, Esq., Clerk of the Legislative Council, passed the examina- tion and received a commission to practice as a Provincial Land Surveyor. Mr. Ball is also a member of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, has a certificate of a full practical course in Meterology, and the degree of B. A., from McGill College. He intends to open an office in Charlotte- town, aud to practice as a Provincial Land Surveyor and Civil Engineer. He is cer- tainly well equipped for his work, and we

An the explosion which occurred in No. 5 Pit, W ellington Colliery, yesterday, about ninety lives were lost. An investigation showed that the fan house’ had been des. | troyed as wellas the work ip the shaft The | shaft’s timbers were so badly damaged that | the cages could*not be used, but pulleys and ropes were being prepared for the work of | rescue. Men went down when it was! found that the explosion had taken | place in the last level, and in this 25 miners and a number of Chinese were imprisoned. At 5 o'clock this morning all the white men at work on this level had been brought to the surface dead, and the | work of bringing out the Chinese began. There are about seventy more bodies in the mine yet, and there is no reason for be- lieving that any of them are alive. Three fourths of the men in the mine are China- | nen Al endeavors are being | made to recover the bodies, the greatest | obstacle baing the after damp. No hopes are entertained of saving the lives of those below. There is no scarcity of yolunteers, How the explosion occurred is a mystery.

Manhood Suffrage Bill had been prepared, and would be submitted; that the inter- provineial conference resolutions would be submitted for consideration, and that the bills were - in preparation for carrying into effect such offthe resolutions as required legislation on the part of this Province. A bill will be submitted to limit the number of hours, during which in any week young persons can be employ- ed in retail shops, and to promote the early closing of retail stores. The appointment of a Minister of Agriculture was recom- mended, to whose special attention all mat- ters relating to agriculture and kindred subjects may be transferred.

Fifty Cases in a Week. A Feeling of Alarm.

New York, Jan. 25.

The fact that nearly fifty cases of Small- pox have appeared in Brooklyn within a week is causing serious alarm, as the continued cold weather tends to increase the danger of contagion, Yesterday seven new cases were found, but only four were removed to the small pox hospital. The others were quarantined in their homes. It is feared the small pox hospital, which now contains fifty patients, will soon be overcrowded, and they will quarantine as many as possible at home. The Grand Jury in Brocklyn summoned a number of physicians yesterday as witness- es, and made enquiries «as to the efforts made to prevent the spread of the disease.

A Terrible Explosion. JENKINSTON, Pa., Jan. 25.

Early to-day a terrible explosion oc- curred at a dynamite factory at Bethayres station. The building was destroyed and the workmen blown in all directions, several being badly injured. John Gaston had his side cut open and his left arm torn off, and will probably die. The other injured men may recover. Every pane of glass within half a mile was broken.

Electien Petition Trial.

CayvaGa, nt., Jan. 25. The trial of the election petition against the return of Dr. Montague, M. P. for Haldimond, has been going on here yester- day and to-day, and every charge has so far fallen through. The case will likely conclude to-morrow.
