Sr. Part’s Cuvecnu.—To-morrow even- ing in the S ‘hoolroom, at 7.30 o’clock, an interesting lecture on Church of England missions in the Northwest, by the Rev. A. W. Daniel, Rector of Crapand. It will be illustrated by a large map of the Dominion 7 ft. across, specially prepared for this lecture. Admission free. Collection at the close on behalf of Wycliffe missions in the Northwest.

Tue Caapavp Creamery was put in oper- ation yesterday. 3.500 Ibs. of milk was furnished by 35 patrons. Great crowds of spectators were present throughout the day. The machinery worked to perfec- tion and the interest displayed by thoze present was so great that Mr. John Moore, of Crapaud, the prime mover in this en- terprise, declared himself to be the hap- piest man in the Province.

Anne de Beaupre, Quebec, have ordered the construction in Belgium of a magnifi- cent communion rail for the Basilica at the shrine. which will be of chased white marble. They have also ordered a large pulpit in white marble, which will rest on the figures of two angels, also constructed of marble and of full life size.

Tue Acapta Horer.— Mr. Hall has made extensive improvements in the Aéadia Hotel and grounds this season, and will open for the reception of guests on Saturday next, June 23rd. The .grounds have been tastefully arranged and enlarg- ej,a beautiful tlower garden and a nice lawn tennis court added. A Curp’s Sceppes Deara.—On Thurs day afternoon the little two-year-old child of Mr. R. W. Ambrose, traveller for the Imperial Oil Co., was playing about Queen Square in apparently good health. Shortly afterwards the little one was found lying on the doorstep in an unconscious atate, as if in a fit. Dr. Preston was called in and he at first coneluded that the child had eaten something poisonous, but was not long in finding out that the child had been enffering from whooping cough ‘and had become unconscious during a paroxysm of coughing. The little one died in the even- ing, without regaining consciousness.—St. John Globe.

I have on different occasions alvertised pure bred stock in your columns and was well satisfied with that from a small ad. in your paper this spring of pure bred Yorkshire pigs and eggs for hatching from Plymouth Rock pouitry, I received numerous enquiries, from Cardigan in the East to Port Hill in the West, and to every enquirer [ made a sale of either pigs or eggs, which [ think you will admit is & Very satisfactory showing.

Nobody, however, felt that he would make such a complaint as the “Hansard” records. Everybody supposed that Sir Richard Cartwright would demand that the dnty be made still lighter or taken off alto- gether. Imagine the surprise of the

Here is what he said :—“I doubt extremely whether at this moment, on several of these articles, the agricultural implement makers receive any protection at all, and 1 feel no doubt whatever on another point, that if the makers had been, most of them better supporters of the honorable gentleman and his friends than they have, they would have received very different treat- ment at the hands of the Government.” Sir Richard is always making himself

ridiculous, but nobody expected that he would make himself quite so riliculons as _ that. In the same) debate. Mr. MeMullen, of Welington, | made some rather important admis- | sions. The Conservatives have always

contended that in order to destroy Canadian industries Americans were willing to send | their articles over here at a cheaper rate then they supply their own people. This Sir Richard Cartwright and Mr. MeMallen aod the rest of the Opposition have declar- el tobe nonsense. Invagine, therefore, Mr. McMullen declaring that agricultural | implement makers in the United States, while they sold their binders to Americans | at $100 each, sold them for export into | | |

Canada at $75 each. Now let us follow Mr. McMullen’s admission. Let us take it for granted that the American manu- | facturer of agricultural implements will sell his binder for $75 provided it is com ing into Canada. The new tariff puts 20 per cent upon such implements. 20 per cent. of $75 is $15; add $15 to $75 and you have $90. Therefore the American implements can be bought in Canada for $90, while the same implement, to use Mr. McMullen’s statement can be| purchased in the United States for nothing | less than $100. Mr. MeMullen knocks | the bottom out of all the theories he and | his friends have been urging for years. The action of Sir Richard Cartwright shows just how honest these gentlemen | are when they pretend to be friends of the | farmers. There ts not the slightest doubt in the world that should the Government | to-morrow remove all the ‘protection to | manufacturers, we should find Sir Richard | Cartwright and his crowd taking the man- | ufacturers to their bosom and appealing | to them because their interests had been | ruined. How much more worthy of being trusted and charged with the manngement of public affairs are the Conservative ad- ministration. They appeal to no particu- lar class. They do net endeavor to make capital by setting one class against another, but they adopt such lines of pol- icy as they believe to be for the best inter- ests of the people as a whole, and they are willing to stand or fall by chat policy. Of course Mr. Foster and Sir John Thomp- son know that the popular thing for them to do would be to take off every cent of taxation and appeal at once to the people. In doing this, however, they are well aware they would be showing themselves to be demagogues, and they are none the less aware that their action would only be heaping ap ruin for the country; and this they are not prepared to do in order to hold office. It appears to us that the back- bone which the Government have display- ed in refusing to be dictated to by agitat- ors should receive the praise rather than the condemnation of every Canadian. cc ee
