ing aversion for those people whom she had formerly loved. Her father especial- ly bad been dear to her. and never in her life had he shown greater kindness than during her long illness. Yet she awoke one day to arealization ofthe fact that it was no longer pleasant to her to see him; that, indeed, her eyes involun- tarily dropped when he came near, and ber_lips took on the sullen expression of a displeased child. Her younger sister, with whom she had probably spent more of her time than with any other mem- ber of her family, amazed her one day by bursting into tears, and by giving as the reason for her unhappiness the fact that she was evidently no longer wel- come in her company. Her mother not- leed the change in her general attitude toward her and grieved over it.

The girl herself did not for a second fail to realize the unreasonable nature of the change in her ment! attitude. She did not for a second eves try to ‘find a sufticient cause for it in the actions of her family. She knew that it grew ont of some sudden alteration in her own mental condition. But, in spite of her efforts to ovecome it, her aversion to those who were nearest to her and should have been dearest to her, continually in- creased.

Matters reached such a pass at last that she could not enter the room in which any of her family were present without shuddering and shrinking. so great was her dislike for them, At last she became convinced that she was on the verge of insanity, and went of her own accord to consult Dr. Lays. With him she talked frankly, and toward him she felt none of that strange aversion.

Of course, his first move was to see her family and learn what he could of the circumstances which had led to her unfortunate condition. Then he began a conventional system of treatment, con- sisting of nerve-tonics, physical exercise and similar health-giving measures. These had little effect upon the girl. She told him with the tears rolling down her cheeks, day after day, that the unac- countable aversion for the members of her family was increasing rather than decreasing. The moment she permitted her mind to dwell upon any of those per- sons whom she ought to bave loved best, it was filled with a dislike, such as one feels for certain dishes or odors. There Was no resentment in her mental atti- tude, she merely disliked, she did not hate, bot her dislikes soon reached the point where it made her home life un- bearable.

All this, of course, had a serious effect upon her physical health. She pined and suffered in body as she pined, and

Thas Dr Luys tells the story of his first experiment with his new instru ment and its resnJt. He has made many experiments since then. In the carefully written book in which he keeps a record of his work at his office the stories of these experiments are ecoacisely told in scientific terms. I¢ would not interest the public at large to go into the details of pulse, temperature and other medica! technicalities which these records con tain, but their general evidence is fascin ating. If this evidence is borne out by subsequent experiments the sentence * Dispositions for sale,"* with which this article opens, may not in the future seem as absurd as it does now. What studies Dr. Luys has been able to make have tended to prove the following facts:—

First—An ordinary electro-magnet so fashioned that it will rest upon a per- son’s head with its poles touching his temples will to some unknown extent absorb any strongly morbid influence which may at the time be working in his brain.

Second—After the magnet has been lett for a sufficiently long time on the bead of a person suffering froma morbid mental complaint, and is then placed upon the head of a person in a normally healthy state of mind, the morbid tend- ency of the sick man’s raind will be to a considerable extent transferred to the healthy mind of the other person.

Third—No appreciable effect is pro- duced by transferring the magnet from the head of one perfectly healthy person to another,

Fourth—The transfer of the magnet from the head of a healthy person to that of one suffering from melancholia or other morbid mind disease is neariy always perceptibly beneficial.

Europe to-day is the young czar of Russia. ‘The Nihilists believe they have frightened him already out of his mind, and are rejoicing thereat, claim- ing that he suffers from loss of memory. It is said Prof. Mandel, the famous Berlin alienist, was sent for some time ago to see him, and that great secrecy attended his movements. However, he is now at the royal house party at Balmoral, having come there from Denmark. An observer at Copenhagen thus describes his habits and man- ners:—

“The emperor has not been here long. but it is already easy for us to see that his habits are totally different from those of his father. Alexander III. loved hunting, riding and walk- ing. His successor scarcely ever walks or hunts or rides. In fact, he eschews almost entirely everything demanding physical exertion. Of medium height and delicate constitu- tion, Nicholas II. will never be chief of an army or master of any sport. He delights to shut himself up in his study to read, to write, to think over state affairs, and to attend promptly to raatters brought him by the daily couriers from St. Petersburg. After dinner he smokes a few cigarettes, and then generally plays billiards for an hour, At1lo’clock he retires for the night, and sleeps as peacefully as a child until 8or 8:30 a. m.”

Religious Toleration in China,

Since the restoration of peace and his return to Peking, in an interview re- ported with a Methodist bishop, Li Hung Chang said:—

‘Say to the American people for me, to send over more missionaries for the schools and hospitals, and I hope to be in a position both to aid them and pro- tect them.” Ascentirmatory of these sentiments, it is announced that since the war terminated al! restrictions upon the propagation of the Christian religion have been expunged from the Chinese code. On the other hand, the war seems to have had the contrary effect on the Japanese, and we find the imperial diet engaged in decreeing the erection of Shinto templos in Formosa, in order that the spirit of a celebrated prince, and those of others who fell in the service, may be worshiped as gods; and the captured cannon are being molded into an immense Buddha to adorn the capital.

An Argument For College Sports.

Outside of emergencies there is much to be said in favor of brawn, and fortunately it is no longer necessary to argue that brains are better when there is brawn be- hind them, while on the other hand the time has already come when those who se lect athletes have little use for brawn with- out brains. So they supplement eacb other moreand more. The college man carica- tured for years as a consumptive, then as a big brute, is today neither. The type isap proaching more nearly to that of soundness of body and mind. Twenty years ago a father exhorted his son to study hard and stand high; now the anxiety is that the stu- dent should not fail te take plenty of exer cise.

The strongest argument in favor of school and college sports is the one advanced by nature herself. She develops the body be fore the mind. A man reaches the prime of physical power years before the maxi- mum of his mental strength is attained. The best systems, wacked by the best ex- ponent of the times, have failed to make physical development popular among men whose college days and days of youth were over, who were in the struggle of their life’s work. It then takes too much out of the man to build up his physique. He has not the time. I[f he had done the building years before, exercise will prevent retro gression. Youth is thetime for physical development, the time to expand the chest and increase the biceps, to take the larger proportion of bodily exercise. Then in ma turity the proportion should change te a mental exercise with the other for relaxa- tion.—Century.
