LETTER ‘FROM SEBASTOPOL.

The following Letter from the camp before Sebastopol, has been kindly handed to us for publication.

Camp before Sebastopoli Au ust 9th, 1855. Beloved Father and Mot er; _

It is with feelings of heartfelt gratitude ‘to the Almighty for the preservation of ipylrfe amidst innumerable perils since my arri_val in these regions of death or inevitable rain, as you have either to encounter sickness or wounds, or in all probability a total change of ever thing, from our arrival in the Crimea unti fate may destine you for some other mode of life, than that of ahyect misery, not to men- tion thc man dangers and hardships that in British soldier is exposed to; still his manly spirit sup orts him in his hours of pain. of which I are not pretend to relate as I am conﬁdent, it would be worse than useless for me to attempt giving you a detail. In a word. our hardshi sare great,tliey far exceed the seven labours oft erculc-s,at present; should they end at this point we shall consider ourselves happy, as I am led to believe, that the grand crisis has now arrived, the hour is at hand when we shall lieliold that proud City in ruins, with its ramparts, towers and battlcinciits which have proudly hidden deliancc to us during along siege. I am sorry to say it is not in my power to give you that news which I would wish, however what I may fall short in this you may very soon expect to hear of cheering news from the vigilant hcsiegers. am confident you have heretofore heard of our attack on the Mnmclon Port on the 7th of June. and of our ooinplete annihilation of the Russians on that night; also of their night attack on our ad- vanced works, from which they are always driven with a severe less, you have also heard of the unfortunate nllair on the l8tli ofJune, when our Arm lost about 2000 in killed and wounded; the 8th re iment lost on that day a ut 163 men in kiled and wounded. Our force was very weak on that day as our Brigade consisted only of ﬁve Regiments, namel : 9th, 18th, 28th, 38th and 44th ; the l8tli, 3 th and 44th advanced to attack the Russian rille-pits on our right and left, from which we soon dis- lod them, but very few of them returned to their beloved Sebastopol to relate their morn- ing adventure. We advanced through the Co- metery undor the deadliest ﬁre ever experi- cnced by the British army. As live Russian batteries together with the Russian shipping played a deadly game on us, we had nothing to repel their cannon shot, shell, grape. canister, rockets and grenades, but true heroic vnlour, ad to an unerring riﬂe and practised eye ; after 18 hours‘ hard ﬁghting exposed to the many privations attendant on warfare, we had to retire, still we did not leave. until we set fire to is large portion of the suburbs of Sebastopol, this wss.tlie only ard of ground gained that day either by En rlish or French, and we know the utility of this hard fought piece of land (the property of deceased Russians.) We have had a few night attacks from the Russians, they were repelled as usual ; they are now shelling our camp, as they see we disre rd them in our trenches, they commenced this cowardly work yesterday; they shall rue it, as we have assured their cit this long time, but in a few days‘ time we siall salute them on all sides with deadly missiles, as we are to spare nothing Russian. We expect siege oporations will com- mence on the 18th or 20th instant if not previous
