He said a following of a few priests with loose consciences did not sanctify the ‘‘no rent” cause.and pointed his people to the position of the Pope as opposed to secret organizations, and concluded address with the sermon of the day, telling the people of his diocese that between the revolntionists of the League and all good Catholics, lines were to be sharply and de- terminedly drawn.

Mr. F.—More prosperous than ever. The early part of the season was dull; but about the first of July the boom commenced. From that time building operations were energetically prosecuted in all Cities of the State ; mining was thoroughly stimulated ; the construction of railroads was vigorously pushed forward, in the Gunnison Country valuable discoveries in bituminous and anthracite coal were made. I, there- fore, feel safe in saying that the prosperity of Colorado was never greater than it was last ; and, its prospects were never better than at present.

towns are paid $4.00 per day, and in towns east of the Range, such as Denver and Pueblo, they are paid from $2.75 te $3.50 per day. Miners who understand the business, are paid $3.00 per day with

board. Herders receive small wages, as a! ruie,

Rep.—To command high wages in Colo- rado must work hard ?

Mr. F.—Yes. Those who look for easy jobs there seldom tind them. Such are generally given to invalids who go te the State for the benefit of their health.

Rep.—Taking Colorado as a field for labor, would you advise cur young men to

Mr. F.—Not unless they are young men,

thoroughly temperate in their habits, goed |

strong workers--men willing to undergo hardships—and who have pluck enough to surmount the greatest difficulties and hard-

ships. Weak men have no business in Colorado !

Rep.—But, Mr. F., the first class of which you spoke would succeed in any

country. How would Colorado do as a field of emigration for our surplus papula-

| tion, which is chiefly composed of corner

loafers !

Mr. F —It is just the place. The Vigil- ance Committees would make short work of them, and thus rid the world of a pesti- lence.

MORALS.

Rep.—The morals of Colorado are se- verely commented upon by the Eastern Press. Are they as bad as reported ?

Mr. F.—There is as great difference be- tween the morals of the populations in the cities east of the range and the mining towns, as there is bet. een the morals of an Englisaman and a Chinaman. In the Eastern cities law and order are preserved as strictly ss in the cities berdering the Atlantic. But in the mining camps or new towns the administration of justice is

diffarent. The roughs and outcasta of all other cities go there to plunder. The well-disposed take the law |

in their own ghands. The result is the administration of justice by Judge Lynch, and during this administration property is to a certain extent secure. In the mines there are always a great many disputes, but those who are in fault are dealt with ina very summary manner. In the older towns crime the decrease. Leadville is pretty well clear of its roughs, and life and property is pretty secure there. While a man square with his fellow-man ; avoids questionable places, such as dance- houses, drinkiny-saloons, etc., he is just as safe in Leadville or Gothic, as is in

Is LANDERS IN COLORADO. Rep. —How about Islanders in Colorado? Mr. F.—A great many Islanders are at work in Colorado. They can be foand in

ali parts of the State, are willing to work, and are succeeding. those with whom I have made acquaintance have all good positions. A few among them have weak nerves. These have no push. They generally have arough time and are not likely to sneceed in any country.

Rep.—Who are the most successful Islanders in Colorado ?

Mr. F.—They who keep sober, give dancing-saloons a wide berth, refuse to gamble, and take the first job offered to them—no mater what it is.

Rep.—Have they been successful ?

Mr. F.—Yes— most of those with whom [I am acquainted own good mining pro- perties, or oecupy good positions, Those who have succeeded are men of push, men willing to work, men deserving of success. A few weak-kneed Islanders out there, have a hard time of it. They lack the energy, and courage, and will and never suceeed in any country.

Rep.—Who are the most successful | Islanders you know of in Colorado ?

Luona Mine; What are its prospects ¢

Mr. F.—-They are better than ever. A

| during the past seasun; the existence of two rich veins has been clearly established, and it gives promise of being one of the great mines cf Colorado. The only dis- appeintment the company met that the mine required much more than anticipated from surface showing before making it a producing property. But the mine is now yielding the highest quality of mineral, and in richness is only exceeded by one mine in the State of Col orado. The buildings are all complete. Work on it is suspended for the winter, but in the spring the mine will be worked with a full force of men. We met much trouble from designing stock-jobbers, and from a faithless officar in the company, but that trouble has been removed, and we ought now, judging from the present out- look, to have uninterrupted success for the future.

Rep.— Several reports were in circulation here derogatory to the character of the Luona. Were they true!

Mr. F.— Certain envious, small-minded men here, I understand, did ali they could to kill the mine and myself. Their reports were false as the men who uttered them, and I dare them to repeat their statements, now that I am here to defend myself. It would be had enough to fail attera three

Campion has several rich mining pro |perties near Leadville ; and the Messrs. | McFarianes, formerly of Bedeque, are | largely interested in mines, but to what ex- itent | know not. Many other Islanders | have mining properties in the State, but | their real value has yet to be found. THE CLIMATE.

| Rep. to Mr. F.—A word about the cli- | mate, and J am done.

Mr. F.—The atmosphere of Colorado is clear and dry. ‘The air is pure. But the altitude—from 6,000 to 14,000 feet above the level ef the sea—does not agree with everyone. The climate is beneficial to con- sumptives, a great many of whom have rec- covered their health in the State. When I say consumptives, | mean those who have gone thither in the early stages of the disease. Asthmatics never fail to be cured. To give an idea of the weather of the State

344 were dry ani cloudless. The climate of thegmountains is much healthier than the climate of the plains. This may be judged from the fact that last year in a population ef 10,000 in and around Gothic, only one death occurred aud that was the result of an accident.

Rep.—Do you intend returning in the Spring.

Mr. F.—Yes. I will remain the winter, during which time I have agreed to deliver some lectures.
