At this happy season, when Roman Catholic and Pro- testant Churehes are preparing to celebrate the advent of theiy blessed Lord and Master’s Nativity on this earth, it is pre-eminently consonant to one’s feelings in a Christian paper to read the insinuating proposition, and receive the bland advice of Christian Rajah.

A storm, or rather a succession of storms, more severe

| these Islands during the last few days. ithe wind had been blowing from the Kast, and it increased in violence on Thursday and Vriday last, and on Saturday, blew a very heavy gale from the same quarter, The mercury in the Barometer tell rapidly, and stoed very low. On Saturday evening the wind fell a little, and blew from two (or three points South of Nast, but on Sunday morning it , was blowing a severe gale from the South West. <A very | high sea was running into Hamilton Harbour, and the vessels | at anchor there pulled heavily at their anchors, but fortunately | their moorings proved equal to the strain, During the forenoon of Sunday, the wind being West, the gale increased in violence, and, at times, tremendous gusts and flaws struck the land and the water. Afternoon, the wind raged with terrific violence, and from 12 o'clock until about two p.m., it blew a harricane. off many houses throughout the [slands, and some buildings were blown down, Somerset Church was damaged. Jhe walls of the Roman Catholic Chapel or School Room in this town, which had risen, within the last few weeks, with marvellous rapidity, yielded to the storm, and disappeared almost entirely, and the gable ends of a more substantial building, which is intended for a School-room in connection, we believe, with Trinity Church, gave away almost at the same time. Several boats in and near Hamilton Harbour /either dragged their moorings or parted them, and went on ‘shore. A small boat at the bottom of the Lane was blown | over und broken to pieces. Several large trees near the same spot were blown down, and among them cedars, which 'in all probability were much older than the eldest inhabitant. | Many cedars were also blown down on the hills on the South- | side‘of Paget parish. | The Bark Pearl, riding at anchor outside of Hamilton | Uarbour, between White's Island and the Norih Store of

Truly we may say of this visitation, as the old Hebrew Seer said of the advance of a conquering i hero, before it wus as a-garden of roses and belind it, it {loaves a desolate wilderness. ‘The industry of months has been destroyed in a moment, for, notwithstanding the high winds which have prevailed, the plantations looked healthy ‘and robust uotil Sunday noca, and the fatal blast which blighted them at last was apparently a brief but very severe flaw from the North West. The potatoes, sweet and Lrish, are, as far as we have heard, quite destroyed; and other vegetables, such as turnips, peas, beans, radishes, lettuce, and pumpkin vines are not less injured. The arrowroot alone | appears to have escaped. Such, at least, is the effect of the storm in such parts as we have heard from; but we hope to | hear better accounts from other quarters.—DBermuda Royal | Gazette, Oct. 26.

WRECK OF THE “ PETREL.”

|at Pictou on the Gth instant, reports having experienced a gale from the 25th to 28th ult., in which her stauncheons /were carried away and boats stove. She had on board the captain and twelve of the crew of the ship Petre?, of Quebec, which were rescued in an almost exhausted condition from the wreck of that vessel on the 28th ult. The rescue was made with difficulty, as the boats of the Petre? were all ‘washed away,—the long boat of the Major Norton stove, and her jolly boat so much injured that she had to be patched with canvas to keep her afloat. The Petred, Captain Sulli- van, it appears, sailed from Quebec oa the 16th of October, ‘for Androssan, with a carge of timber. She sprung a leak ‘in a severe gale on the 25th ult., the pumps incessantly | going could not relieve her. On the 26th had 2$ feet water ‘in her hold. At noon started wood ends and went on her

beam ends,—main and mizzen masts were cut away and the |

‘ship righted. As the sea was making a complete breach over ‘the ship, the men were ordered to the fore-top. One man, ‘named McBride, came out of the top and went into the house ‘on deck,—a sea broke over the ship and carried away the ‘house, and three boats,—McBride was not seen afterwards.
