Street was managing the Joplin team of the Western Association in 192a, after experiences in similar cupaclties throug hthe southeast for a period of years-none marked with real success. Highlights of his liic at that time were memories oi the days he caught Walter John- son, and days in IFrance when he yvas shard-boiled marine sergeant. Gabby was getting old. There ap- peared little to look forward to. yet today he is driving the Car- dinals toward their second succes- sive pennant in the two years he has managed the National League club. _

There is no manager to compare him with. He has the fervor of youth, leaps like a. kitten when a home run is smacked. Snaps out harsh, caustic words at an um- pircs decision he doesn't like. Drives his clubs like a stem father. There have been bralnier man- agers. He makes his miscues of iudgnlent, but the energy he con- sumes trying for a. victory day af- ter day, has won the fans. None of them can say that Gabby isn't a fighter-a dynamo of constant ac- tlcll.

silfll Breadon, in 1920, needed a mun who had been through it all, to keep Grover Alexander on the straight and narrow. He hired Street. Gabby came to the Cards with the title second coach, but he W85 nothing more, in fact, than old Alexander's ifkse, assigned to follow the wandering pitcher, to guide him away from pitfalls (if he could) and keep him in trim, so the Cards might win the pennant.

Street Failed as Nuns for Algxander

Street failed at that task. No one could have succeeded.

Gabby probably was the best wulchdog Alexander ever had. He could talk to Alex from his "own experience. He had tried Alex's route himself, and saw it led no- where. But one day in midsummer he save up on the Alexander as- slgnnlent, went to Brendon and ad- untied failure.

When Brendon saw Billy South- worth needed more minor league experience as a manager, and de- clded to let Bill McKechnie go late in i929, 1t was stl-‘cet who stepped ahead. There was no disposition on the part of sports writers when‘ announcement was made that hubby would head the club in 1930, to fire salvos of applause. 1t looked like Brendon noted for his quick shifts of lnanlfger, was just k999i"! Island Ministers: SHUBENACADIE, Aug. l'1.—At a meeting held following the even- ing service Sunday the congrega- tion of Stewiacke United Church extended a hearty and unanimous call to the Rev. H. E. Campbell, B.A., of Pownal, P. E. ., to become their minister. The congregation has been vacant since the end oi June when Rev. L. B. Campbell ac- cepted a call to Summerside. Should the minister oi Pownal accept this call he will be the third minister of the name of Campbell who has ministered to the important con- gregation of Stewiacke since it be- came a separate congregation in 1890. Should Mr. Campbell accept

FUNERAL OF JOHN CASFORD -The funeral of the youthful vic- tim of Saturday's accident, Scout John Casford, was held from his home, on Elm Avenue, to Saint Paul's Church, where a short fu- neral service was conducted by the Rev. l-l. D. lliaymond. In addition to the large cortege of citizens, the Boy Scouts, of which "Johnnie" was a prominent member, attended in a. large body to pay their last respects. Johnnie was a. member of the Baptist Troop, of which he was Treasurer. His warm and happy disposition won for him the friend- ship'and respect of all with whom ho came in contact. Later, attend- ing the Scout Camp, his willing- ness and his desire to do ht best in Scouting led in thelsuecesaful passing of his Second Class and part of his First Class tests. While at camp, his ability to mix easily won for hi a host of friends. He quickly bec me popular with his Patrol and worked harmoniously with them 1n their desire to win the much coveted Scout Bung. He promised to do his duty, to help others at all times and obey the Scout law. Johnnie did his best. Bu: Scouts acted as pallbearers. The delay in opening the nego- tlations is owing to the callers! election campaign in New Zealahd. no Government ever being able to synchronize diplomatic nasotlfililvm with an election contest. In thc present case the question of trade relations with Canada occupies *1 conspicuous place among the issues.

Correspondence between Remicr Bennett and Premier Forbes, part of which was cabled from New Zealand last week, is now fully 1s- sued here. The record shows that the Canadian Government, though adhering to its policy of furnishing adequate protection to the domestic dniry industry and affirming its confidence in that industry's sup-

posslble season of shortage, is pre- pared to meet the New Zcaland ~Government on the general ques- tion. It will “take up the questions of time and place as soon as suits the‘ convenience of the New Zea- iand Government after the general election." A cable from Right Hon. Mr. Bennett conveys this assur- ance.
