Tur Rev. Mr. Hannington, of St. Bar- tholomew’s Church, New Edinburgh, has been appointed domestic chaplain at Rideau Hall by their Excellencies. A special service for the household at Government House is held at 9 o'clock every morning.

A nemper of French, Dutch and Belgian gentlemen, members of a French scientific ex- pedition round the world, are at Quebec. They left their vessel at San Francisco, and will re- turn by way of Niagara and Chicago. They have already been seven months on their ex- pedition. The full party numbers twenty, each of whom pays $4,000 for the trip.

(tub) from 15 to 18 cents per lb.; flour (per 100 lbs.) $2.76 to $3.00; oat- meal (per 109 lbs.) from $2.50 to $2.75.

Says the Chicago “‘ Tribune”: adian Postmaster-General has a quiet but ef- fective way of smothering any aspirations among the employes of the Department for pro- motion or increase of salary. He simply noti- ties them that any application of the kind will be regarded as a resignation.” It certainly woul be avery effective way of smothering budding ambition, but we think Mr. Lange- vin will be surprised to hear he haa adopted it.—Toronto Mail.

carried on in Charlottetown scarcely be imagined. called a system at all. able to shoulder an adze or drive a ten-penny nail imagines that some peculiar gift of provi- dence has been placed in his possession to enable him to hammer out a fortune and erect dwelling houses. Within the last year some dozen or so of these slippery individuals have taken contracts at very low rates, and either ran away before the work was completed, or spent a gloomy season behind iron bars, think- ing what fools they were when they threw aside the aprons of jolly journeymen. The actions of the men who take contracts at these low rates, trusting for protit to the grinding of their brother workmen whom they employ at the rate of eighty cents a day, and to the margin they allow for roguery and swindling in material, is merely a lingering method of cutting their own and their Sdecebees throats an | starving their wives and children.

The consequence of every journeyman car- penter finding and. taking small contracts on his own responsibility, at such low rates that he has to pinch and almost starve himself to

There are three classes amony the me- chanics of the town: the journeymen, who are the most numerous, form one class, who work for day’s wages; the master builders form the next class, who generally possess a certain business faculty, contrived with a thorough knowledge of their trade; the third class is composed of journeymen whoare either too lazy or knavish to work at their trade, but attempt tc compete in building with the mas- ter builders. This third class may be com- pared to the drones of a beehive, which in- sects are so lazy and troublesome that the working bees put them to death.

Now, the only way for the working-men to bring the trade of building into anything like a system, is to kill off all the drones; and it seems that the simplest manner to do this will be to co-operate and form a Mechanics’ Union, so that all the members shall bind themselves to certain rules and regulations, Such regu- lations would be useful. For instance—de- ciding by the whole society, or by sub-socie- ties, as to who were qualified to be employers or master-workmen; the rise and fall of wages ; the preference given by employers to members of the society in hiring labor ; relief funds ; an honorable understanding between employers in tendering and in competition for contracts.

Whenever men are united together in socie- ties, having a common work and object, such as those wnich the trades of masons, carpen- ters or plasterers naturally divide enrolling men into, there will be found extreme variety in the value of labor of individuals. -As is naturally the case, the number of masons qnalified to be employers or master-workmen will be staall compared with the mass of work- men in the society. If the various members of those societies would join together, with some mutual understanding between them— from the master-workmen downwards—the worthy msn would soon find their proper place.

WE are in receipt of Chappelle’s Almanac for 1879. This almanac is, undoubtedly, in advance of any issued, ana contains, in addi- tion to a large amount of valuable information, the new oat table, currency table and other necessary matser for farmers. The Justices of the Peace are arranged in a good way, only those who are living and qualified being in- serted. Our space prevents us reviewing this work as it deserves; but we would say to all, get a copy and review it for yourselves. They are only 12 cents each.

Of a mechanics union of the sort proposed, it might be imagined that the master builders would club together, keep the working man’s wages at a low rate, and overcharge the pro- prietors with whom they contract. The in- ternal constitution of the nnion would protect the workingman’s wages, and an honorable competition among master workmen, who un- derstood their business, would protect propri- etors from being over charged.

DEATH OF PRINCESS ALICE

Indsiposition of the Queen.

Darostant, Dec. 14. The Grand Duchess of Hesse Darmstadt, and Princess Alice, of England, died at 7.30 this morning, of diptheria. She was unconscious from 2.30 until her death. Her father, Prince Albert, died on Saturday, Dec. 14th, 1861. Lonpon, Dee. -14, The Qneen is indisposed. Orrawa, Dee. 14.

has created a feeling of sad- ness, and- very great sympathy

is felt for the Princess Louse, who is .the only one who isso far separated from the other members of the family. This is the first death in the Royal family outside of the Queen’s husband.

_ Rideau Hall will likely go into mourn- ing; and the festivities consequent upon the arrival of the Princess Louise will likely be postponed.

In consequence of the death of Princess Alice, Earl Beaconsfield has requested the postponement for to-day of the Address and Casket from the English residents on the Pacific Coast of the United States.

The Central ‘‘ News” is informed that the Queen, though greatly grieved by the news from Darmstadt, is not ill. The flag at Windsor Castle is .half-mast. The bells at the Royal Chapel and Eton College are tolling, and nearly all the houses, public and private in the Royal Borough, are closed.

Mr. Bourke has formally consented to resign his seat for West Durham. A Re- form Convention is to be called on Wednes- day next, for the purpose of nominating a candidate to represent the Riding in the Local Assembly. It is understood that the whole position will then be discussed, and ithe probabilityis that Mr. Bourke will be selected as the Reform candidate for the Ontario House, and Mr. Blake will run for Commons.

Lonvon, Dec. 16.

In the House of Commons to-night, Sir George Campbell remarked that the Porte was still able to largely import munitions of war from America, although it professed the inability to relieve the Rhodope refu- gees.

Mr. Stanhope, Under Secretary for India, moved a resolution that the consent of the House be given to the defrayal of the Af- ghan war expenses from the Indian rev- enues. He said that the Government hoped and believed the war would remain a more frontier war.

The jury on the McCarthy case again dis- agreed—there being 7 for their conviction and 5 for acquittal. Itis thought there will be another trial.
