1. Alcohol, I Stimulant or Depressant?

gives rise to a "feeling of bodily warmth." This feeling is mislead- ing, and has led to the false idea that alcohol is I defense against cold Ind exposure.
This sense of warmth comes not from iiwreesed heat production in the body. but increased warmth of sldn, because of the enlargment of the surface blood vessels caused by the llcohol. This in turnvleads to I loss of bodily heat much like heat escapes from a house if the house is not insulated. This is the reason why alcoholic drink used to be given as I. medicine to reduce certain cases of fever, before better medicines were developed for, the purpose. A low temperature is particularly dangerous when one is exposed to cold, or in a weaken- ed conditicn, when it may result in chills and pneumonia.
Where endurance is called for, and resistance to cold is needed. the prence of alcohol in the body is actually harmful. A Brit- ish authority has summed up the matter in this way: "Arctic ex- plorers are forbidden the use of alcohol by leaders of their ex- pediticns because it causes a loss of heat which is especially dan- gerous in cold climates, and be- cause it lessens strength and eli- durance."
3. Is Alcohol I Food?
Advertisers of some kinds of al- coholic drinks use descriptions us- ually associated with food, trying apparently to give the impression that Iloohol deserves a place on our list of good foods, because, of its nutritive value. This, too, is I misleading view.
While beverage alcohol is burn- ed in" the body and thus energy, it contains none of the vitamins and minerals so necessary to health and growth. In fact drinkers are particuarly susceptible to certain diseases simply because they are not getting enough of the right kind of food.
Alcohol is not even I good source
of energy. It cannot be stored for future use as can be done with fat and carbohydrates. In addition. it cnmrot be used to give extra energy so often needed in running, playing games, or doing muscular work. When I person takes vigor- ous exercise, the body can burn or oxidize carbohydrates four to ten times faster than normally to pro- vide the extra energy needed. This it cannot do with alcohol; there is little increase in burning even dur- ing strenuous exertion. There is another count against alcohol as I. food, and that is that it interferes with the body's use of other foods. If alcohol is pre- sent in the body along with other food materials, the body will burn up the alcohol first. If enough en- ergy is provided in this way for the body's needs, other proper rods are left unused. A person may therefore feel as if he were being well fed, when as I matter of fact he is Iuffering from lack of pro- per nourishment.

Like most businesses. it began in a very small way, but it grew so rapidly, both in size and importance, that Mr. Self. the owner. had to engage and train a general manager and I. score- tary to assist him in his affairs. The manager's name was Mr. Crit- icism, and the secretary's Miss Memory.
Mr. Criticism was I rather ser- iousminded person, with I. strong sense of duty and of the conduct, manners and general behaviour which were to be expected from I firm of such standing as Self, Limited. Wherever Mr. Self went. there went Mr. Criticism It his elbow, noticing everything, and al- ways ready with a whimered word of advice, encouragment or wom- ing. Mr. Self relied on his good judgement in everything, and as a. result the firm of Self, Limited, was held in great respect where- ever it was known. lrlie Secreloiry, Miirri Memory. was equally valuable to the firm. She made notes of everything that happened and entered them in special notebooks, all carefully indexed. so that at ii moment's notice she could turn to anything required.
Most of her note-books she car- ried about with her tucked under her arm or in her pockets, but there was one book she always kept in a box. which she would allow no one else to touch. The box" was marked "Private''.,, and Mr. Criticism kept the key on his watch chain. -

"I'd be careful what I was I- bout, Sir," whispered Criticism in his ear.
"I'd be careful how I let In old sipoil-sport dictate to Me!" whis- pered Mr. Intoxicants in the other ear. "You are a silly muff!"
"Oh, come along then!" exclaim- ed Mr. Self, impatiently. "I'll be friends with you for tonight."
"That's I. sensible fellow!" cried Mr. Irntoxloants, and elbowing Mr. Criticism to one side he squeezed his chair in next to Mr. Self and sat down. '
It was wonderful what a dif- ference it made 'to Mr. Self. He no longer felt dull and out of things, and he began to talk more and to raise his voice so as to get attention.
"Sir! Sir!" whispered Mr. Crit- cism, trying to reach round Mr. Imtoxicarits to pull Mr. Self's coattails. "You're preventing other people talking, and you are not saying anything worth hearing."
Mr. Intoxigants nudged Mr Criticism sharply with his elbow. "Shut up!" he growled; but to Mr. Self he exclaimed, "Excellent! Ex- cellent! I knew you would be a brilliant talker if you let yourself

"Min Memory has sortie swear words and a few nasty bits of gossip and some secrets in the note-book that's locked up in that box she always carries about with her," said Mr. Self. "I'u tell liar to get out the swear words and the gossip."
"Never mind about the key!" said Mr. Intoxicants, seizing the box. With one wrench he pulled off the lid and out fell the care- fully guarded book.
"There you are, self!" cried he. "Now see if you can't make every- one sit up!"
There was no doubt about it, Mr. self did make them "sit up." He used the bad language, he told all the nasty bits of gossip.
But even the longest. parties come to an end, nnd Mr. Self got home somehow.
When Mr. Self wakened he found Miss Memory and Mr. Criticism with faces as long and dismal as could be.
"Hello!" he cried. "What's the matter?" "Matter!" echoed Mr. Criticism:
"the disgraceful way you behaved last night! I did my best to check you, but how could I get your at- tention when you let Intoxlcants slip in between us?"
"I did not notice he had done that." said Mr. Self.
"No one ever does," said Mr.
