._ ft is announced that the Government of Oatario will appoint four delegates to the Hygienic Conference to be held _in London, and the Government of New Brunswick two. The object of the London Conference is to promote health in every community represented in it,—to prevent disease, to save life; and anything to these ends is of prime importance to humanity. We hope, therefore, that the Government of this Province will not let slip the oppor- tunity to send a delegate.

— An official of the Pullman Palace Can Company said to a reporter of the Montreal Witness, a few days ago, that he did not remember so great a rush as that being made this summer to Canadian summer re surts. Generally, Canadians went to watering places in the United States to spend their holidays. This season, how ever, they are going to the Lower St. Lawrence. He accounted for this by the fact that hotel rates were much less than those prevailing in the United States. The ears leaving for the St. Lawrence are now crowded every night, and the tratlic was getting heavier every day.

—The statement that the recent seizures at Campobello were made outside the three-mile limit, is denied on good auth- ority. The St. Croix Courier says :

“‘Withont regard whether they are right er wrong, United States fishermen may be relied on to make a howl whenever their pockets are touched, as they have been in the recent seizures made at Campobello by the Dream. In this case they are evidently wrong, for the captain of the Dream is a very cautious officer and would not be likely to make a seizure unless he were sure that he was pretty nearly right. The reference of the matter to the state department of the govern- ment at Washington lends an interest to the seizure which it wou'd not otherwise possess, and the proposed investigation wiil give the officers employed an opportunity for a pleasant outing at the nation’s request. If the enquiry ends in the appointment of a commission to determine definitely the bound- ary between the two countries, it may be a practical benefit, and settle the rights of the Quoddy fishermen once and for all. The Conrier has but one opinion as to the result, and that is that the action of the Dvreat’s commander will be sustained; while it is like- ly that the complaining fishermen will be

—We are pleased, says The Week, to see the proposition to erect in this country a concrete memorial of the late Sir John A. Macdonald taking such definile shape His influence upon the country was enormous, both within our own boundaries and beyond them. Canada now is thought of, spoken of, and written of as she never was before, and even political opponents of our late Premier must grant that had Canada not had a man of such ability at her head for so many years this might not have been as true as it is to-day. And when that great leader has gone, it is time for even political opponents to sink acrimonious criticism and to aid in perpetuating the memory of a great name. Whatever views are held in regard to particular political methods or achievements, at all events one and a.| can conscientiously contribute towards a nation al memorial to Sir John Macdonald. It would be idle to suppose that the Primrose League is the oniy body in which repeses a remembrance of the late Earl Beaconstield ; it would be as idle to imagine that when the time comes for the departure of the present great advocate of Home Rule only Gladstonians will cherish the memory of their leader. So it is pleasant to think that men of all shades of political thought can and will help to keep alive the name of Sir John A. Macdonald.

Lemuel McLeod vs. John Cowan. An action brought against a returning officer for refusing to give a ballot. Judgment reserved, Peters and Haszard for plain- tiff; Morson for defendant.

The case of Mrs. Dingwell, a Scott Act appeal from the decision given by two J. P's. Mrs. Dingwell’s counsel contended that the case should not have been tried by these Justices of the Peace, as the prosecu- tor is related to one of them. The Master of the Rolls reversed the decision of the lower Court on that ground, but refused to allow her any costs, as she had manifestly been guilty of a breach of the C. T. Act.

The Court is now occupied in hearing the auit of Herman McDonald vs. Hugh Me- Eachern, an action for ejectment.

Nearly twenty years have passed since the Germans took possession of the French provinces of Alsace aud Lorraine. Every effort has been made to ‘tGermanize” the provinces, but with what little success may be judged from the fact that at the recent elestioncf membersof the Municipal Couacil of Metz twenty-three of those chosen out of « total of thirty-two are described as anti- German. The Government had been re- laxing the stringent laws imposed on the people uf Alsace and Lorraine, but it is now supposed harsh measures will again be resort to.

The explosion of the gun on board H. M. S. Cordelia on the 29h ult., was one of the most fatal casualties of its kind that have vccurred for many a day in the British naval service The cruiser was proveeding from the Fiji group to Noumea, N.C., in the oourse of a cruise through the Soath Pacific Islands, and, while firing practice was going on on the 29th of June, a six-inch breech- loading gun exploded killing two officers and four men and more or less severely woundiog ahout a dozen others. Lieu. Hilyer, R. N., one of the victims, was an able officer having received the Goodenough medal for proficiency in gunnery on attaining his lieutenancy. Lieut. Gordon was in the Royal Marine Light Infantry. One of the victims was the ship steward’s boy, John C. R. Brown. The captain conld give no explanation of the

fatality. The Cordelia is a steel ship ot 2,330 tons cisplacement and 2,420 horse power. Her poop was shattered.
