The navy department having given Lieutenant Peary five years’ leave in which to search for the north pole, he will start about July 10 ona _ prelimi- nary expedition to Whale sound, on the northwest coast of Greenland, where be will arrange with the Eskimos for furs and provisions, to be ready when he returns a year later. In July, 1898, he will start out to go as far north as possible, taking certainly two years for the trip and possibly four. His plan for next year is to leave his ship at Whale sound, push up the coast with a party of Eskimos to latitude 81 degrees and establish there on Osborne fiord a col- ony and base of supplics, which shall keep in constant communication with Whale sound. The site of this colony he expects toreach in September, 1898. After spending several months in col- | j

Mrs. Peary will accompany her husband on his preliminary expedition this summer, but on his final expedition he expects to have only one civilized companion, a surgeon. During one of these political upheav- als Miss Calhoun was one day walking with an older lady near the Bois de Boulogne, when she waa suddenly con- fronted by one of these wolfish demons, who demanded her money.

Miss Calhoun instantly grasped the situation and realized that something altogether unusual must be done,

‘*Yos, Isee that you have need of money,’’ she said quite gently, ‘‘but, as you see, my hands are filled with parcels. If you will just put your hand into my pocket you will find my purse.’’

‘‘But, madume—madams —’’ replied the poor wretch, with a profound bow.

With another deep bow and again a muttered ‘‘Madame’’ the desperado re- luctantly edged toward her, put his haud in her pocket, withdrew the purse, opened it and took from it the smallest coin that it contained. Then replacing the purse in her pocket, with a gesture of the most profound respect and grati- tude, he shuffled away.—Exchanze.
