a very melancholy accident occurred at St. Eleanors on Friday evening Jast. A son-of Mr. William Tanton about 14 years of age, was driving a horse and cart, the horse ran away, upset the cart, which passed over the poor fellow’s body, killing him instantly. We sympathize with the bereaved parents. — Progress.
A Grand Excunston.—To-night a grand moonlight excursion will take place on beard the *‘St. Lawrence.’ The steamer will leave Steam Navigation Co’s wharf at 8 e’clock, sharp, and will preveed to the various points ou the Bay, returaing m good time. The band of the 82ad Sattalion will be present. We feel sure that Capt. Evans and Mr. Chandler will do all in their power to make a pleasant excursion for all who attend.
Some Time aco it. was stated that Miss Augusta Steadman, of Mill Village, who raduated from the Women’s Medical Col- ege of New York in May last, was the first lady graduate from Nova Scotia. A singular
item went the roviids in 1873, stating that;
Miss Anns Maxwel!, of Mount Thom, Pictou, who graduated from the Medical College, Philadelphia, was the first Nova Scotia lady to take the degree of Doetor of Medicine. Two others graduated in 1874. They belonged to the Cornwallis Valley. If there are any other claimants to priority (and there may be), we would be happy to »ear of them.

Three thousand people to-day attended at a meeting called to make a demonstra- tion in favor of the abrogation of the Papal Guarantees Law. The chairman, Sig Pet- roni, was a person who was condemned to a term of penal servitude under the Ponti- tical Government. After several speeches, a resolution was proposed declaring the abrogation of the law indispensable. The po.ice delegates present refused to allow the resolution tobe put, when some dis- turbance ensued, but the meeting finally dispersed quietly. Addresses -were read from Garibaldi, Louis Blanc and Victor Hugo.
Cuicaco, Aug. 8. The Tribune this morning, referring to the Irish conclave, says the meeting is com- posed mainly of representatives of the Cian-na-Gael Society and Emmett Monu- ment Association. Measures were taken to disassociate the Irish name and nation from the insane ravings of QO’Donovan Ressa, and te unite the governing bedy of the various organizations in ene, with head- quarters outside of New York or Philadel- phia. It was desired to use greater exer- tions-to equip Irish revolutionists with war material, and to settle bickerings about the skirmishing fund, Sr. Pererapura, Aug. 7. The ‘‘ Journal de St. Petersburg,” re- plying to tewspaper criticisms accusing Russia of paying too much deference to the susceptibilines of England concerning Cen- tral Asia, says Russia, for her own interests and not frem a regard for England, has fallen back in Central Asia. She, in this respect, was guided hy the same rational motives as those which dictated the judicious policy of Mr. Gladstone relative to Afghanistan. Lonpon, Aug. 8.
The Standards correspondent at Rome says that serious proposals have been made recently to the Pope that he should trans- fer the seat of the Holy See to America, where an independent position will be assured him.

Last evening, on a railroad train at Shan- nondale, George Wright, a passenger, while sitting in his seat in a coach, was approach- ed from behind by two men, one of whom buried a hatchet in his skull; the other fired a pistol ball into his head. The mur- derers rushed from the car and escaped.

A London despatch says great dissatis- faction was caused last week by a decision of the International Medical Congress not to admit lady docters to the meeting. Forty-three properly qualified lady practi- tioners entered a protest against this exclu- sion from practical meetings, although ladies were admitted to six preceding Con- gresses. The protest had no effect. stated in a letter to the Daily News that the decision of the Congress was inflnenced by the Queen. Ata preliminary meeting of the executive committee a majority were in favor of ladies being admitted, but they were over-ruled by Sir William Jen- ner, who declared that he was empowered to remove the name of the Queen as a pat- ron of the Congress if lady doctors were admitted to medical meetings.
