Down on Hoopskirts --Senator Boord has introduced « bill in the Indiana L»gis- lature to prevent the manufacture and sale of hoopskirts in that state. Ic declares that the fashion of wearing hoopskirts is revived by a combination ‘of fashion pro- ducers and dress goods manufacturers. Women are compelled to wear them by a fear of being ostracised by society. Sena- tor Boord is 26 years of age and unmar- ried.

A Corkection.—This morning's Guar- dian says :
“The Dominion Coal Co., of Montreal, are about purchasing the five steamers of the Black Diamond Line. This looks as if the Miramichi will be the only Montreal steamer running to this port next summer.”
We are authorized by Peake Bros, & Co. tosay that the above statement is not trae. The steamers of the Black Diamond Line will run here as usual next summer.
A Nice Lecat Potnt.—The Halifax Herald says: An interesting case was tried to-day in the county court. The plaintiff is Dc. Farrell and the defendants the representatives of the late John Rut- ledge. The deceased was a patient at the hospital and waa attended by Dr. Farrell. The defendants claim that patients ad- mitted to the hospital are not obliged to prv doctor's fees. The plaintiff contends that when a person is in @ position to pay, he or his estate is obliged to do so. ight doctors were called to give evidence on this point. The late Juha Rutledge’s estate is valued at $5,000.

Sr. Dunstan's Catruxpral,—The first of the series of special sermons on ‘“ The Sucraments,” to be given in St. Dunstan's Cathedral during the holy season of Lentwas, delivered last evening by Rev. P. A. Mc Elmeel, of Kelly's Cross, ‘*Baptiem” was the sscrament considered. The reverend gentle- man, after @ brief review{of all the Sacra- ments, proceeded to deal particularly wit) the Sucrement .{ Baptism, showing ite Divine origin, «id peiuting out the manner of per- forming the :ite and the necessity there was for ite pri mpt administration. The sermon secupied about three quarters of an hour in ite delivery. There was a large congregation. The next sermon of the series will be given on Sunday next at 7p m., by Rev Ronald Macdonald, of Rustico. Subject ; ‘*Penance— the Priest has the Power to forgive Sins.”

Cuitp Burnep To Deatu.—We deeply re gret to learn that a child of Mr. Allan D. Mee Donal ', Peake’s Station, was burned to death yesterday. The family, with the exception of a little boy about three years of age and a lad ofsixteen were away from home. The latter went to the well for a bucket of water and when he returned he found the little fellow in ableze. The child Imgered in great agony for about an hour, and thea expired. Before he diedhe said *‘raatches”; and it is inferred that he rad been amusing himself with this highly dapgerots plaything. ‘The sympathy of the community is extended to the child's parents.

Acep Nova Scottans,—Three of the oldest people in Nova Scoiia died last week Malcolm McMullen, aged one hundred and six years, is the fist we will mention. He lived at Catalone, C. B., in the house with his own son, graudson and great grandson. For years past it was a daily occurrence to see the four gene rations working ia the fislds together. Mrs. Catherine Ross, of North East Margaree, C. B., died, aged 101, leaving 208 grandchildren. Mrs. Donald Chisholm, aged 1/2, died at Guysboro Interval. Two of her brothers were priests. On the same day fifty years cgo, two brothers, Joseph S. and Edward P.lmer, married two sisteis, Phebe and Caroline Chesley. Both couples and their families celebrated their golden wedding at Salem, An- napolis, a few days ago.

A plea sant and erjoyable evening was spent in vocal music rendered by members of St. George’s choir and others. Songs were given by Mis-ses Young and Mason; Messrs.
