Scientists say that the earth has a history which stretches back millions 'ol years-m: a. time long before there were any people. The remains of thousands of animals which lived 1n misty times have been dug up. We cannot tell exactly how long ago those creatures lived: but some of them ‘swam or crawled probably 25,000,000 years before the present moment.

though they had no bones to leave. At certain spots. mud happened to form around the dead bodies. In the course oi time, the mud hardened and became rock. Thus we know something of how the early jellyfish were shaped.

The best remains from that period are of fish. Great numbers died and sank to the bottom of the sea. Mud covered them up, and their bones were-saved.

North America arose out of the waters long ages ago. At first it had a far different shape than it has-now. There were ocean waters in many parts which are now dry land. For instance, the sea covered large sec- tions of the present Atlantic coast region. It also rolled over the lower valley of the Mississippi. Kansas is one oi the states which was Partly under the sea.

In the waters around North Amer- ica, one oi the chief kinds 0f fishes was the “Titanichthysfi That name

s made up by men of science. It means Giant Fish.

The Giant Fish left enough re- mains to give us at least an idea oi how it looked; but we must remember that any picture an artist makes of it is partly guesswork.

It is believed that the Giant Fish sometimes grew to a length of 18 feet. The mouths of some of them could certainly open four feet Wide!

The United Baptist Church, Sum-- merside, held their annual meeting and banquet in the Baptist Hall last Wednesday evening. The metingopen- ed by singing "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow," after which about one hundred members and adherents sat down to a sumptuous banquet prepared by the ladies oi\ the con- gregatlon. The tables were beauti- fully decorated with plants and flowers and everyone enjoyed the good things provided. A musical programme followed which was much enjoyed. The numbers were: Piano Duet, Misses Helen Leerd and Dor- othy Silliphant; Instrumental music by Misses Doris and Mildred Wood- side and Miss Irene Johnson; Vocal trio by Misses Ruth Simmons, Mil- dred Woodside and Irene Johnson. A solo by Mrs. A. Adams was much appreciated. -The pianist of thb ev- ening was Mrs. Dobson. A short but pleesin _ address was delivered by the pastor, Rev. A. Adams, who is very optimistic in taking up ths work of the Church for the year.

The reports of the Church showed that about $4,000 had been raised during the year, the Sunday School having raised the amount of $411, of which $200 has been paid out for missionary objects. = The amount handed in at this banquet was over $400. All departments of the work are in a very thriving condition. The meeting and banquet was one of the finest held in the history oi the church and they are looking for- ward with unity of purpose and bright pr for a successful year of work in 1929. S
