Maroon Sisters Congraiulaled On Victory

The O'Leary Maroon Sisters hockey team is .receiving con- gratulations on ,winnlng the Is- land hockey title at the Char- lottetown Forum on Saturday evening. March 29th. in the sec- ond gamo of the home and home total goal series against the Char- lottetown I Abegweit Sisters. The Physical Fitness trophy was pre- sented to the 0'Leary teamvafter the game. In 1921 the inspection of meat. and milk started in Charlotte- town. The Hon. Charles Dalton provided a Sanatorium and the Red-Cross started public health nursing. and shortly afterwards the Junior Red Cross was estab- lished in the schools. In 1923 Miss Wilson became head of the Red Cross clinics for crippled children. Then in 1925 the ln- surance companies became alarm- ed at the incidence of T.B. here and assisted financially in chest clinics and other work. The need of a sanatorium was reccgnhed and opened in 1931. In 1928 Dr. Creelman was made the first jhici health officer. Then Dr. W. . P. Maclvlillan as head of the Gov- ei-nmcnt of the day set up a Gov- ernment Department of Health and in 1948 the whole program was speeded up by the Federal health grants under the direction of Hon. A. W. Mathcson, Minister of Health and Welfare.

There are ten divisions in this department, T. B. Control under Dr. Found. the Division of Public Health Nursing, under Miss Wil- son, tho Sanitary Engineering un- der W. K. sharp, Vital Statistics under Mr. William Crockett. V.D. Control under Dr. Prowsc, Nutri- tion under Miss Rolland. Labora- tory Divlsion under Dr. Harold Shaw. Cancer division under Dr. Hooper. Mental Health under Dr. Mucheson. Den at Health under Dr. 0'Meara. r. Curtis explained various functions of each of these Departments. - 0

Thanks Extended

The thanks of the Rotary Club were ably expressed by Hon. Dr. W. J. P. MacMillan who said that Prince Edward Island was furth- est ahead in all Canada in taking advantage of the health grants provided by the Federal Govern- ment at Ottawa. He referred to the T.B. death rate which he said had been reduced from 180 per thousand to about 20 per thousand which is a wonderful record.

Dr. sterling Giddings. President of Rotary, referred to the death of Hr. J. P. Crockett which occurred early yesterday morning. Mr. Crockett had been a inembe of the Charlottetown Rotary Club for many years and the sympathy of the Rotary Club is to be con- vcyed to his family. Dr. Giddings also read a written acknowledg- ment from the Red Cross for the Rotary donation to the Crippled Childrenls Work.

Mr. 3. Graham Rogers, secre- tary of the Club. delivered a mes- sage which had been given to him by J. B. Murley of the Unem- ployment Insurance Commission calling attention to the "Back to Work" movement and urging all citizns to get done now whatever jobs they need before the busy aumme starts and thus give employment to heads of fam- ilies who are now temporarily out of employment.

"On highway maintenance we were compelled to expend 3510.000 - 360,000 more than the Appro- priation of 3450.000; snow removal 3150.000, or 385,000 more than the anticipated 365.000 voted on the basis of normal requirements; while the cost of garage operations and maintenance of machinery. due to the heavy wear and tear which those conditions entailed. involved an expenditure of 3245.000 or 350,000 more than the amount pro- vided in the Estimates last March. "During the current year the total expenditures in this Depart- ment on ordinary account amount- ed to 31,106,200; including cost of administration. maintenance of bridges, ferries. and wharves, bush- ing ice, and the expnditures not- ed above.

-Her many friends will regret to hear that Mrs. John Cullen of Hope River had the misfortune to fall and suffer a broken hip. Dur- ing the storm of February 28th. on outside door in her home blew open and while Mrs. Cullen was attempting to close it she slipped. resulting in a break Just below the socket of the .101 t. Mrs. Daniel Goodwin. Kensing- ton, was "at home""to her friends on the evening of March 22nd, when neighbors and friends gath- ered to honor her on the occasion of her eightieth birthday. Mrs. Goodwin was the recipient of many beautiful gifts. cards. and letters of congratulation. During the evening a program of music and songs was enjoyed with Mrs. Fred Parker at the piano. Messrs. Fred Parker. Allan Murphy. and Harold Goodwin. assisted by some of the ladies. were heard to ad- vantage in many of the old fav- orites. A delicious lunch was served by the ladies. with the piece dc resistance being a beauti- fully decorated birthday cake which was made by Mrs. Roy Mc- Arthur. At a late hour the guests said good-night with many wishes to Mrs. Goodwin for health and happiness in the years to come. and plans for celebrating many more birthday anniversaries.
