‘Ve take very great interest in the movements of Mr. Yeo, M..P. The hon. member has been very silent and quiet dur- ing the present session. It is pleasing to learn by the following notice of motion, that he is alive and well :

-Mr. McKenzie has not yet lost his faculty for saying sharp things off-hand. The other day Sir John Mucdonald pointed out that if the Government followed the inconsistent and contrary advice of members of Mr. Charlton and Mr. Davies’ stripe they would fall between two stools:

—We clip the following from the Cana- dian Journal of Commerce :—

‘* Representations are being made in Ottawa of the unreasonable enforcement of an obnoxi- ous excise regulation by one Curliss, a so-called Customs detective, in the country towns of Nova Scotia. One of our Montreal manufacturers ship ten boxes of tobacco to a Nova Scotia dealer, and if the latter opens a box and takes the tobacco out for sale. the letective drops on him and seizes the article for being ont of a stamp “dd box. This obnoxious regulation will, it it be carried out, completely ruin the retail trade of small shopkeepers, and is too petty a business to be done in the name of the Dominion of Canada.”

It would be well for our merchants to be on their guard against violating these regu- lations.

-A sensational telegram from Berlin is published in the New York ‘Erening Sun. It says that the press corespondent Blakely Hall, is unable to send telegrams and letters from Berlin deseribing the real situation there on account of the censorship maintained by the Government, and that he has conveyed to London secretly the following information :—There are grave fears of a sucial uprising. The Crown Prince is protected by extravrdinary pvulice pre- cautions whenever he appears in public. The Social Democratic party is alarmingly active and is flooding Germany with seditious ducumenats which the police are busy in coutiscating. Houses are searched by the police in a most despotic fashion Some of the pamphlets issued reviie the Crown Prince and accuse him of ruining daughters of the people.

~The Legislature of New Brunswick passed a License Act at its last session—a very stringent measure. Amoug the pro- visious which are new in the regulation of the liquor traffic is one declaring it illegal for a licensee to receive anything but money in payment for liquor, and this he may not receive in advance; nor shall he purchase wearing apparel, tools, imple- met.ts of husbandry or trade, fishing gear, household goods or furniture, the compen- sation jor which is intoxicutiong liquor, under a penalty of $20 and restitution of the property. For harboring a policeman or constable, or supplying hia with liquor when on duty, the fine is $59. For selling to a person under 21 years there is a tine of oe a is a fen uty for supplying iquor in club, society or association by members, where the club or society is un- ucensed ; penalty $50 and confiscation of the goods. Mr. Ruskin does not find that authorship spells beggary, for his publisher sends him £4,000 a year. He has written in all sixty- tour works.

There is no shadow of foundation for the report that the Prince of Wales contemplates a visit to America next year In company with the Duke of Southerland.

Congressman McKinney, of New Hamp- shire, says he has never tasted a drop of beer or liquor in his life, and twelve years ago he stopped drinking sweet cider. All the same, he thinks prohibition is a failure wherever it has been tried.

A London cable says: Lord Stanley, of Preston, Was a guest at the Canada club dinner. Lord Stanley, replying to the toast of his health, said, while adaering to his own political views, he recognized that at Octawa, he must serve the state and not himself. Referring to the recent criticism of his imperial federation views, he held by every word he uttered at the federation league banqnet when he spoke of the great and growing interest between the mother country and other parts of the empire. He regarded the criticism as an attempt at political thought reading with which English,politicians ave well acqua:nted. Mr. Chamberlain was unable to attend the dinner but wrote, expressing his regret. He said his recent visit to Canada increased the pride and interest he always felt in the Dominion, Che bishop of Algoma and Principal Grant, of Queen's University, Kingston, also spoke.

Another cable says: ‘‘ Mr. T. P. O'Con- nor is responsible for the statement that Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Parnell met last night for the first time in their lives at dinner. The giver of the dinner was Mr. Armitstead, form- merly member for Dundee, and the scene Mr. Armitstead’s house in Cleveland Square, under the shadow of St. James’ Palace, Staff- ord House and Bridgewater House. There is no more aristocratic neighborhood. There was a company of six altogether, the other three being John Morley, T. E. Ellis and Herbert (¢ladstone. Mr. Ellisis a Nottinghamshire colliery owner and member tor the Rusheliffe division of that county. The meeting, I judge, is the fruit of Herbert Gladstone's di- plomacy, as he is more or less a permanent guest of Mr. Armitstead, who is a strong Home Ruler, and a prosperous Russian mer- chant. So, perhaps that terrible impendin split between Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Parnell mav be averted. The bitterness of current politics again showed itself yesterday in the House, on the bill for giving a salary to the Irish Under Secretary. There are not two better-tempered men in England than Mr. John Morley and Mr. Balfour. But on this burning question they have contrived to fall out. Mr, Morley accused Mr. Balfour of bad faith. There is no evidence of bad faith, and Mr. Balfour resented the charge in terms which implied a breach of all present relations between himselt and Mr. Morley.”

Fought a Mad Dog Alone.

A Nashville, Tenn., despatch says: Miss Mollie Green is the heroine of Perry Co., Tenn. Miss Mollie, who is eighteen years old, teaches school in Cypress Creek, in Perry County, though her father, Robert Green, lives across the Tennessee River, in Hick- man County, The little log schoolhouse was quiet, and the little children busy with their lessons a few days ago, when a shaggy dog, foaming at the mouth, snapping and biting, dashed in at the door and sprang to- wards one of the children. The brave teacher thought only of the children in her care and sprang between them and the in- truder. She told them it was a mad dog, avd kicked at it, her skirts protecting her. By the aid of a heavyruler she kept itjat bay until all the children had fled. The infuri- ated animal repeatedly sprang at her throat, but she was too agile to be caught and reso- lutely held her ground. When all the little ones were gon» she desperately fought off the dog untii she reached the door, which she pulled tu after her and fell fajnting outside. The children had in the meau- time ran to the nearest house, an eighth of a mile distant, and gave the alarm. Two men came up, and after reviving the teacher with water, killed the dog. The dog had been in the neighborhood for two days. The gratetul parents of the children tovk up subscription and will give the young lady a fine saddle horse. Her clothes were literally torn off during the struggle with the dog.

A Danecerovus Patent Mepicive.— An exchange says: A specimen of Seotch Oats Essence, a proprietary article just now ex- tensively advertized and guaranteed to cure the opium habit and recuperate tired brains and nerves, has been analyzed by the Massa- chussetts Board of Health and found to contain one half a grain of sulphate of morphia to each fluid ounce. Alcohol is present, too, in large quantity. The New York board of health is having an analysis made with a view to commencing criminal proceedings against the proprietors of the preparation.

AvxotukR Unrortunate.—A North Sydney C. B. despatch reports that a young man named Hector McNeill attended a wedding at that place a short time ago. He left the house about ten o'clock in the evening. On the way home he complained of feeling unwell, and remained over night at. the house of a friend. In the morving he was found dead. An inquest was held and a verdict was re- turned that ‘‘ the deceaged came to his death from paralysis of the heart, brought on by ports ing of very injurious intoxicating iquors.”

Exception Taken.

Sir,—In the very interesting article under the heading “* Varia,” which appear- ed in your issue of the 5th inst., 1s one paragraph to which I venture to take ex- ception. In the list of euphemisms for death, the quotation from Gray, ‘‘Gone to salute the rising morn,” does not, I think, refer to death. The line occurs in ** The Bard,” and the poet has been describing the sad desertion of Edward III. on his death bed, he then asks what has become of the Black Prince? a question answered by saying that the Prince ‘rests among the dead.” He then asks about the butterfly courtiers who disported in Edward’s ** noon- tide beam;” a question also answered by saying that they ‘‘ have gone to salute the rising morn,” the *‘ morn” being Richard Il. It seems to me to be a poetical repro- duction of Pompey’s ‘well known saying that ‘t more worship the rising than the setting sun,” meaning that more persons pay honor to ascendant than to fallen great- ness. I imagine that the idea had its origin in allusion to the Persian fire worshippers.

Before I close this letter permit me to take exception to another statement made by your correspondent some weeks ago, that the Bishops occupy seats in the House of Lords “by reason of their baronies.” This statement is inexact and involves a grave error of constitutional law. For be- sides the fact that the baronies themselves did not exist till the Norman Conquest, the tenure of the Bishops was not at any time per baroniam, but in frankalmvigne, so that they were not barons in right of their possessions, byt the sessions were baronies in right of the holders as customary barons. And they had aright to ‘sit and vote in the House of Lords before obtain- ing the temporalities of their sees at all, and even before consecration, once they were elected and confirmed. What clearly shows that the Bishops never have been accounted barons, in the tem- poral sense, is the fact that they are liable to be tried by a jury of commons and can- not claim a jury of peers.

Many people imagine that the title, **‘ My Lord,” is given to Bishops in England be- cayse of their right tosit in the House of Lords, ‘This is a vulgar error. The Bishop of Sodor and Man always had this title, although he has no such right. Al) Bishops are politely called *‘My Lord.” In the first canon of the fourth Council of Arles, A. D. 524, Bishops are called ‘‘ Sacerdotes Domini,” and the title now given is simply a translation of the word *t Dominus,” and is without any reference whatever to their temporal status.

Tag Last Survivor.—Norman McDonald of Big Bras d’Qr, Cape Breton, is dead, aged 110 years, He was the last known survivor of Waterloo, having fought in that battle under Wellington when thirty-seven years of age. He was born in the Isle of Arran Scot- land, 1778. After serving in. the British Army in various parts of the world he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1833, when fifty- five years old. He was a man of great activity, and up to twoyears ago did considerable work on his little farm.

I can’t study so well after it. So here goes!” and he flung the book out into the river. He was Fiohte, the great German philosopher.

AttemPTeD Murver.—James Ganong, pros rietor of the Clarendon Hotel, St. John, N. ., has been jailed on a charge of attempting

to take the life of his wife. Some monath’s ago Ganong’s father-in-law died, leaving several thousand dollars to the former’s wife. Ganong has since been endeavoring to get the use of the money, but his wife refused to allow him to handle it, hence the present difficulty.
