Railway Convention.

Tue farewell meeting was held last even- ing in Zion Church, and it was a most im- prevsive service throughout, and, like the others, was conducted by Mr. Meikle. The meeting opened by singing ‘*‘ When the mists have rolled away.” The Rev. John Read, of the Prince Street Methodist Church, offered prayer. The following Vestry Delegates delivered short addresses: Messrs. Boak, Russell, Upham, Turner, Dibvins and Mumfort, also the President, Mr. John McPherson. Mr. Meikle gave a interesting Bible reading on Heaven, and concluded by singing one of Crossley’s songs of salvation ‘* Sweet Rest at Home.” The meeting closed by the delegates and

The observatory at Denecht, Aberdeenshire, which Lord Crawford has presented to the nation, is admitably equipped and includes an astronomical library of 15,000 volumes. There is a telescope which has a fifteen-inch aperture and fifteen feet focal length, by which one half the sky can be commanded at one time, and a superb spectroscope, acknow ledged hy experts to be the finest of the kind in the world,

Rev. Francois Robert, cure of the parish of St. Theresa, Gloucester county, died very suddenly on the 23rd inst. He had been say- ing mass and had retired to the sacristy. A woman entered shortly after with some re- quest. He presently turued pale and stopped speaking, and a moment later fell to the floor. The alarm was given and he was conveyed to his bed, where he « ied an hour after.

Rev. Dr. Crawley died at Wolfville, N. S., on Friday last in the ninetieth year of his age. He was born at Ipswich, Eugland, on the 20th January, 1799. He was admitted as a barrister in 1x22. He finally exchanged the profession of the law for the church, and for a long period of years he has been recog- nized, not merely as one of the ablest and most influential men of the Baptist Church, but of any church in Nova Scotia.

Referring to the death of Robert Douglas McCallum, a correspondent of the Patriot writes; ‘* The deceased was the youngest son of the late Peter MacCallum, Esq., of St. Peter's Bay. As a magistrate he was fearless and impartial in the discharge of his duty, and foremost and energetic in all objects tending to benefit his native place, particular- ly in the advancement of temperance reform. In polities a consistent and unswerving Liberal, he merited and enjoyed the esteem and confidence of his party. Asa public official, in the discharge of Sheriff's duties, Collector of Customs, &c., his conduct was always marked by strict integrity, and firm- ness, although never forgetful of the rights and feelings of others. As a neighbor and friend, he was esteemed and respected and his advice and counsel sought for and ap- preciated. Asa husband and father he was dearly beloved. To his sorrowing widow and

Provincial Exhibition at Truro. (Special Correspondence of The Examiner. )

Since my last visit to Pictou, instead of leaving the boat at Pictou Landing one now goes direct to Pictou, where the pas- sengers take the train by the new road built to Stellarton. On this line are a tine bridge over the West R ver and a junction with the Short Line railway.

The show for the Province of Nova Scotia was not up to my expectations. There were a great many horses. Amongs them were many fine animals, especially the im- ported ones, some of which were from our Island, and got their share of the prizes. In cattle there were about seventy sections. Some of the Imported Durhams were fine. The Jerseys made a good show; but perhaps the most admired werea herd of Polled Angus’s, which were very superior, taking first prize for beef cattle. The pigs were good, Sheep only fair. Poultry only fair; some very good and some— well an expert would not honor them with an award the (Houdans, for instance) while a pair of Buff Cochins were the finest I have seen.

Inside the building, which, by the way, is very well adapted for the purpose, one sees a great display of apples, one exhibitor having one hundred and three varieties, also im grapes, pears and plums, but in everything else there was only a limited supply. ‘The roots and vegetables were not equal to what I have seen in our Pro- vince. The display in woollen goods was small, in fine arts there were only a few entries which were fairly creditable to the exhibitors.

At the races, our horses did well, as your

telegrams showed, although many were much disappointed in Black Pilot’s having to lower his colors to Elmo and Telephone. This is a case of mismanagement. Had he been in good condition when he came to the scratch, and a good pilot to steer him I am of opitiion that you would have had a different report. Care in breeding was never so clearly demonstrated to me as when watching the struggle for supremacy on this track, almost all the competitors being the pro- weny of standard bred sires, and in most of the events the ones showing the best breed- ing carried off the highest honors.

I cannot close this without compliment- ing Truro on its many beautiful private residences, tastily painted, and sitting on roomy grounds nicely kept. The many lovely trees would make one believe that there must be an active arbor society with regular sessions. This is the prettiest town I have seen in the Maritime Pro- vinces. Hotel accommodations are not very satisfactory, but although the Scott Act is inforce, I should say there is not any ditticulty in getting a drink of some thing stronger than coffee.

When returning, [| visited at New Glas- gow, the Glass, and Steel Works, and Forge Company. One seees here much to interest him; and I should say to any sight- seer that when going through New Glasgow to stop over and call on Mr. Walker and Mr. McKay, who are both courteous and obliging in showing yisitors over their works. These institutions employ about 450 hands, and one sees on every hand the rapid march of improvement under the N. P., in our sister Province.

Campbells Cathariic Compound.

(Extract from the Ingersoll Chronicle, July 12th 1888.)

I have much pleasure in bearing testimony to the efficiency of CAMPBELL’s CATHARTIC CompounD, and the speedy relief rendered by it in cages of liver complaint, bilious head- aches, constipation, loss of appetite, dy spepsia, etc., and in all diseases arising from a disor- dered state of the stomach, I have used it myself, and know it to have brought perman- ent relief where pills and all similar prepara- tions have failed. I think very highly of it, and ail those who have used it are unanimous in the opinion that it has filled a long felt want. It is very agreeable to take, and it is as certain in its effects as it is mild in its ac- tion. I have sold large quantities of it, and the demand for it is increasing, and I have yet to hear of one case where it did not give entire satisfaction and produce the result sought for. I am conscientious in recom- mending it, as I believe it only requires a trial to convince the most sceptical of its

The French have discovered a method of making smokeless powder, the detonations of which are scarcely audible, so that the firing will not reveal the whereabouts of an army.

A force under Culonel Graham has total- ly defeated the Thibetans at Jelopha Pass, capturing their camp. Four’ hundred Thibetans were killed or wounded. Col. Bromhead lost his right arm and nine sepoys were wounded. Col. Graham is ad- vancing into Thibecan territory.

Our true knowledge is to know our own ignorance. Our true dignity is to confess that we have no dignity, and are nothing in ourselves, and to cast ourselves down before the dignity of God, under the shadow of whose wings and in the smile of whose countenance alone is any counted being safe.

Steps are being taken to convert the civic debt of Montreal. It is caleulated that £850,000 new stock will now be issued, half the proceeds being applied to the floating debt and loan charges, and the re- mainder to public works. Three per cent. is spoken of as the rate of interest, 34 be- ing the maximum.

The Nene Frie Presse says that in a re- cent interview with Dr. Franc, President of the Austrian Evangelical Council, Prince Bismarck, speaking with reference to the Austro-German alliance, said, **It was my work exclusively. When in 1878 I went to Gastein with the treaty still unsigned, I was quite resolved to resign unless the Em- peror ratified. The allianee has ever since been my policy.”
