EDITORIAL WALKING TOUR.

Tue editor of the Si St. Joke Sun prefers the natural and primitive method of loco- motion, by which he obtains recreation, and an opportunity to see the country. He writes interesting letters as ie walks. We quote a couple of paragraphs :

“There is nothing like walking. Realiz ing these things, we soon put away the trivial and unworthy temptation to use a bicyele on our Prince Edward Island tour, which becan at Summerside on Friday, the 10:h \ngu-t. So we went to the sta- tion and tuck the train for Charlottetown. The passenger by the Northumberland has a good ship to goon. They say that the company to which the Northumberland belongs does not pay as good dividends to the shareholders as it did before the ship was purchased from her Newcastle-on- Tyne builders. The boat was more cost- ly than the old one, and it is more expen- sive to keep her up. The ship that she replaces is to be seen at Charlottetown, and it is easily evident that the dividend which the shareholder has lost the passen- ger gets. Those who say that the North- umberland is too luxurious and elegant. for theservice have not the sympathy of the tourist, who, of course thinks nothing too good for him. But the most exacting wayfarer—even the walking tourist— must admit that in size, com- fort, appearance and steadiness, the Northumberland is equal to his deserts, The railway accommodation for people along the line appears to be good. The scheduled stations are not far apart, and the stopping places are still more fre- quent. As the Island has length without great breadth, no one lives ata great dis- tance from the railway, which reaches from end to end, and no one near the line is far from the station. The railway it- self is operated with the view of giving all the facilities possible, though for geo- graphical reasons this is done largely at the expense of the owners of the road— namely, the people of Canada. But there are afew months in the antumn, after the crop is housed, when the freight traffic is very heavy. Then the farmers are rush- ing their crops to market before the straits are frozen up. These potatoes, oats and other farm products are delivered at stations in enormous quantives. Then the cursory observer can gain for himeelf a hint of the great productiveness of this soil and ofthe effectiveness of the farin- ing. As of old, oats is yet the prevailing crop. But within the pa-t few years hams and butter and cheese and other ul- timate products of the soil are becoming more and more staple articies of sale. The fact that the shipment of goods in winter is uncertain and expensive is a strong inducement for the people to reduce their crop to a condition in which the cost of transport shall be the least pos- sible in proportion to the value. ‘he direct produce of an acre of potatoes which might be worth say forty dollare, could not be got across the straits by an expen- sive means of transport. But when the produce of an acre is changed into eighty dollars worth of pork or dairy stuff, it can be shipped even by a dear method of transport.”

NEWS NOTES.

Lord Wolseley’s promotion to the rank of tield marshal will not interfere with his command in Ireland, which he will con- tinue to bold until October, 1895 There is one thing it does for him, if nothing else; it prevents his falling a victim to the age disqualification. As a field marshal, nothing can touch him, for his name must appear at the head of the list of gen- eral officers as long as he lives.

The “Healthy and Aristic Dress Union” of London is one of the greatest curiosi- ties of recent civilization. At one of its meeting the other evening the chairman was attired in a new fashioned evening suit of brown velveteen, faced with brown silk and worn with knee breeches and silk stockings. Instead of the starched shirt of ordinary wear, he had a silk one with large turn-down collar and a broad white silk tie. Another gentleman was in similar costume, but it was green in- stead of brown.

France is generally thought exception- ally free in marriage relations; but in France a man cannot marry his deceased wife’s sister without the special per- mission of the President of the Republic, which can only be given “for serious rea- sons.” It has just been decided that it is the same with divorce as with death, and *% marriage between a man and his brother’s wife has been annulled because the President’s consent had not been ob- tained. POULTRY NOTES,

Chickens need gravel or broken crock- ery and shell quite as much as do the old fowls. Ifcracked bone is at hand they will eat all that is necessary, otherwise, and a week or oftener, sprinkle a little flour or bone in the mash.

Consistent and persistent care of grow- ing chickens at this season is the sure road to success. Of soft feed give only what they will eat up clean, as it sours quickly. Three times a day is often enough, and the supply ‘of water must be constant. The flock looks better if the cockerels are kept by themselves, and these last are sure to do better, as their feed can be regulated to insure mo.e rapid growth.
