Str,—Seeing Mr. Pope’s uame so often in the columns of the Daily Patriot, I was a little curious to find out how often the editor of that paper has taken the trouble to insert Pope's name in his columns for the last six weeks. After a careful examination, [ tind an average of 21 ** Mr. Pope's” in each issue of the Daily ; 126 each week, and 756in six weeks. All this attention co Mr. Pope goes to show that, as a politician, he is a complete failure !!

The last few weeks have been strongly sug- gestive of the spring and summer of ‘76, when the common and general salutation was in the form of the qnestion, ** Are you going to the Centennial?” Now itis, ‘* Are you going to Paris?” Perhaps more people will attend the Paris Exposition from here than from any- where else in the United States, in proportion to the population. It is even within the reach of Department clerks to go across the water. since such arrangements have been made that one can go for two months for less than $200, which includes all expenses. The clerks are entitled to one month's absence without their salaries stopping, and can easily obtain an ad- ditional month's leave without pay. And so all our little world is going abroad. The mo- ment Congress adjourns, ovr legislators, with their families, will start in a body, for, poor things! they feel as if they were already in need of rest or recuperation.
A correspomdent who has gone from New York to the French capital to “write up the Exhibition,” gives an account the reverse of glowing of our exhibit there. He says the American portion will be the laughing-stock of the whole Exposition and a disgrace to our Republic. Headds that Commissioner Gen- eral McCormick, who has charge of the United States interests there,has done the best he could with the paltry appropriation granted, ani is depending very much upon j/auli yet to be apphed for the appearance of the U. 8. Building. Bat our gwn Lucy H. Hooper, who has resided in Paris for years, writes us that England’s department is interesting and the nearest ready of any, and *‘Next to England, her go-ahead daughter, the United States, promises to come out ‘a good second,’ notwith. standing her tardiness im participating. Most ot her show cases are up and many of the things in order.” She mentions Prang’s chromos, Blabon & Co,’s oilcloths, and other displays, adding, ‘‘But it is almost impossible to see anything to advantage, owing to the busy hurrying to and fro and the excitement that pervades the represe:tatives of our ir- repressible nationality.”
Congress has been insessioa almost continous- ly since October, and histovy asserts that no previous Congress has ever attempted so much and accomplished so little in the same period of time as the one now in session. Of nearly 6,000 bills that have been introduced, not over 100 have passed both Houses and become laws, and of these ut half a dozen or so are of a general nature arul in behalf of the national interest.
Whether or not the loud communistic mut- terinys heard all over the .and, and yrowing liercer and louder each week will amount to anything more than growlig and teeth-snap-
ping threats, remains to be seen and ex- perienced. But one thing is certain, powers
not faintly smoldering exist that could execute the threats, and those who knew, say that the power to stop that executioa does not exist. There are many reasons why the Army and Navy of the United States should be in its very best strength and condition just now. Everybody knows at least that the country is literally swarming with tramps, vagrants, and under-paid laborers who are more than ready to join any lawless movement against right and authority. Then the Indians are promising us more trouble, Mexico is already giving it, there is prospect of ap extensive European war, in case of which we must be necessarily more or less implicated. Fenians are threateni in Canada, and surely our military force woulc scarcely be deemed efficient for all there should they come upon us atonce. There is no question but the coantry’s Chief Executive should be vested with power to increase our army in an emergency by at least 100,000 men, and to have on the stocks a few ships of war useful for defensive purposes. The riots of last summer contaimed good lessons, and it behooves the ruling powers of the land to protit by them to the fullest possible extent. MERRILL.
The appearance of things in the Province of Quebec favors the belief that the Lien- tenant Governor will find it necessary to again dissolve the Assembly, and allow his Government to make a second appeal to the country. The Montreal Star says :
‘*The Conservatives are apparently confident that every member of their party will stick to the ship, and that Mr. Joly will fail in the purpose attributed to him of forming a coali- tion. The Premier has evidently been de- | pending upon his ability, through personal in- \tiuences andon public grounds, to detach a 'namber of more moderate members from the | Conservative party, and thus securing a work-
ing majority. The leaders of the Conservative | party have been cognizant of this, and have, it ‘is said, taken measures to consolidate their \followers into @ compact opposition. Out of | 34 Conservatives elected, 33 have given either | written or verbal pledges to oppose the Gov- ; ernment, and the 34th, Mr. Price, of Chicou- | timi, is reckonened upon as cock-sure. .
