HOW THE GALLANT IRISH CROSSED THE BRIDGE,

One of the most thrilling incidents of the advance of General Buller’s troops to the relief of Ladysmith is re- ated ina letter from Col.-Sergt. Mills, of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, written to his brother in Ottawa. His battal- ion had to cross an exposed bridge on the way to attack a hill. Boers lined the kopjes a short distance from the bridge, and the Fusiliers crossed one at atime, the Beers shooting at every man. The enemy bronght down fifty Fusiliers before the bridge was sand- bagged, and thus protected from the enemy. It was a veritable gauntlet of death, and Sergt. Mills says that had

the Boers been as good shotsas_ they are reported to be they could have brought down a great many more.

When the battalion was across the bridge, the donga over which the bridge led contained many dead, and dying Irish. A newspaper clipping giving an item about the death-trep accompanied the letter, and Sergt. Mills gives his experience. He says: “When it was my turn to cross, I 1ol- lowed, waited until the man ahead was under cover, and then ran {for my lite making long leaps till l had covered the fifty yards, and reached cover. The Bcers were evidently loading as for some cause they did not shoot at me till I had about reached the end ot the run, then a number of bul'ets whistled harmlessly by. It was the fastest fifty yards sprint I have eve: ever made.” Sergt. Mills says the Dublins had the honor of being the first battalion to march through Lady- smith. As they neared Ladysmih they saw the heaps of sandbags use? by the Boers tor the purpose of at- tempting to dam the Klip River. They were given a great reception.
