This did not produce the expected relief; and the old geutleman soon after got up, dressed himself, and sat on the sofa. As he did not get better, Dr. Hobkirk was sent for at about half-past twelve. About two minutes after the doctor reached him, his spirit passed away.

John Morris was a native of Ireland, educaicd (we believe) in Dublin. He came to this Island nearly fifty years ago as a bookkeeper in the employ of Mr. Cambridge. He was the soul of honesty, and was almost as punctual in business, as the sun in his daily course. He was appointed Justice of the Peace, at a time when that title was an honorable one, indicative of respectability and the regard of his fellows, aud he performed _the res- ponsible duties of the position with scrupulous care. For several of the stormiest years in our Island history he filled the important office of High Sheriff of Queen’s County. Of late years, he has lived in retirement, and has been noted for his robust, active and cheerful

old age. EE

To-morrow, being Dominion Day, will be observed as a general holiday by the peo- ple of this Prevince. A large number of picnics and excursions will take place, and every opportunity is offered to those who wish to spend the day pleasantly. Among the attractions is the

The race will be a most exciting one, as it is said all the loose cash in New London will be placed on “ River Queen ” as winner, while every spare dime that Souris can boast of will back the representative ef theeast. The other races on the programme will also be hotly con- tested. EXCURSIONS.

A good excursion is advertised by the Steam Navigation Company, to Pictou and back on the St. Lavwrence. Charlottetown Woollen Factory.

WORK BEGUN—A VISIT TO THB SCENE OF OPERATIONS —A GOOD SITE AND FAIR PROS- PRCTS FOR A LIVELY TRADE.

A year or two ago, when congratulating

| Prince County on its two fine Cloth Fac-

tories, we expressed our regret that Queen’s County, wealthy as it is, did not possess even one equally geod cloth factory. On the contrary, we have very great pleasure in reporting that the reanimated enterprise of this city has, at last, given us as fine & one as need be desired. Last winter, six gentlemen be- came incorporated as ‘‘ The Charlotte- town Woollen Company,” and so vigor- ously have they pushed forward their un- dertaking, that the Factory is now in oper- ation. The writer had yesterday the pleasure of inspecting the first web—a strong, well finished piece of cloth, that would, if made up into a suit and worn, do no diseredit to any genileman in the Province. The Company have _ their city office, on the North side of Queen square, in the store late- ly occupied by Mr. Albert Simpson, the business manager being Mr, W. H. Gordon, wellknown as the former agent in Charlottetown of the Mill Valley Cloth Mills. Here the wool is purchased and the cloth is sold.

The Factory is situate in Spring Park, pretty close to the spring. It is a large and very suitable building of four flats. The machinery with which it is fitted up is of the latest invention, and the best descrip- tion that could be obtained in Worcester, Mass. ‘The engine which drives it is hori- zovial acting, about twenty-five horse- power, and works with such perfect smooeth- ness that the noise it makes is not much louder than the ticking of a watch, while of vibration there is none whatever.

The dye-house, to which the wool is first conveyed, is in a wing on the ground floor. It contains three ‘‘ dye vats,” one of which will hold six hundred peunds of wool. The water and dye in these vats is heated by means of exhaust steam from the boiler.

After the wool is dyed it is raised to the roof, and spread out to dry; when dried it is gathered up, oiled, and put through the picker, a machine something like the drum of athreshing machine; thence it is con- veyed to the carding room where there are three machines—called the Aply Feeder Improvement” by means of which it is thoroughly mixed, cleansed and so manipn- lated that it comes out in a long roll about the thickness of a penhandle, and it is wound up on large spools.

These spools are taken up stairs to the ‘*spinning room.” Here there are two ‘* spinning jacks” in operation, and one no yet put up. These Spinning Jacks, art, perhaps, the greatest triumphs of the machinist, so intricate are the works, so precise and true their action. Yet they are evidently but a development of the prin- ciple embodied in the old-fashioned spi n- ning wheel,to such a degree that they will, operated by,a single hand, spin two hundred and sixty-four threads in the time the spin- ning wheel takes to spin one thread.

As spun the yarn is wound off on small spools or bobbins, which are conveyed direct to the weaving room on the second flat. Here there are warping and weaving apparatus, and six looms,—three only of which are yet in operation. These looms also are but asplendid development of the old hand loom. With good warp,and oper ated carefully, they will each weave from thirty to ferty yards a day. It is notice- able that if a thread breaks as the *‘ swiftly flying shuttles pass,” they will at once stop automatically.

The wes as they come eut of the loom are taken to the finishing room en the first flat. Here they are put through a process of fulling and washing; and, after they are dried, they are put through a ‘‘ teasing machine’ which raises the ‘‘ knapp” er fuzz which covers the surface; then they are put through ‘‘ the shearer,” which shears the “ knap ” off ; then they are pressed in hugh screw presses; and then, lastly, they are run through a mschine which winds and measures them as they pass through it. From it they are taken ready for the market.

The Factery is under the immediate management and supervision of Mr. W.D.McKay who has shares in the Com- pany and is largely interested in its suc- cess. When in tull operation it will eccupy from twenty to twenty-five hands, and will turn out about a thousand yards per week. One of the shareholders informs us that it is the intention of the Company to manufac- ture a good article of cloth and nothing but a good article. In carrying out this laud- able determination we trust they will be assisted by farmers who will make up their minds to raise no sheep that will not yield good wool, and by a patriotic people, de- termined to encourage the use of home capital and the development of native skill and industry.

Fowler, the phrenologist, was the victim ef amean trick by a Washington man. The latter had three photographs of him- self taken, in one of which he appeared to be dressed as a woman; in another as a well- to-do architect; in the third as a spectacled professor. Then he sent the photographs on to Fowler for phrenoligical description. He received in a few days three charts. The ‘‘ architect” was described as an im. pulsive person, of strong lung power, etc., the ‘‘woman” seemed to have less lung power than the architect, and appeared “able to convert nutritious materials into healthy nutriment rapidly and abundant- ly.” The two were well adapted to marri- age. Asto the ‘‘ professor,” he was de- scribed as unfit to marry, being of uncon. genial temperament.

Arrangements for the forthcoming exhi- bition at Halifax are being rapidly com- pleted under the superintendence of Mesars O’Brien, Harris, Raffail, and Griffiths. The Parliament building is being painted and renovated. The Governor-General will be welcomed with an address, and accorded a brilliant reception on his arrival. During his stay there will be a regatta, a review of the troops and man-of-war’s men, torpede experiments, ete.

Dear Str,—I do not know hew much disrespect the editor of the Patriot has gained for himself and the sheet.ever which he presides, through his attempts to create a prejudice against members of the Local Government on the School Question, Con- trary to Mr. Lawson's expectations, how- ever, the general run of people are fairly disgusted with his drivelling on this sub ject ; and if he ever hopes to raise himself and the sheet he controls in the estimation of the people, he will abandon such disreputable attacks All deneminations to allow the School Question to rest. Therefore the editor of the Patriot will find himself unable to re- open this School Question, however much he feels inclined to do soe,

The editor of the Patriot forgets or seems to forget that the people in country districts manage to hold their annual school examinations quite successfully without the aid of Government members, or such pro- found scholars as Mr. Lawson. Still the Scheol Law is nowise endangered on account ef their absence. How absurd it would be for every country district in the Province to expect members of the Govern- ment to be on hand at their school exami- nations. Yet the /Pairiot’s complaint amounts to just this: ‘‘there has been a school examination in every schoo! district in town and country on the Island, during the last day or two, and the members. of the local Government have not attended every one of them, as they sheuld have done.” [n what respeet, may I ask,are the city schools entitled to Government pa- tronage, which is denied to country schools, when the members of the Government have public business to attend to. Let Mr. Lawson and his fellow citizens, if they feel so much interest in the city schools, look after them, and then the editor of the Patriot will find better employment than mixing up the eity school examinations with party politics.

What country people want, Mr. Editor, isto find the members of the different departments in their places, where the present Government are always found, in- stead of strutting round the streets, as their predecessors were in the habit of doing.
